The unsteady flowfields generated by convoluted aero-engine intakes are sources of instabilities that can compromise the performance of the downstream turbomachinery. Hence, there is a need for synchronous, high-spatial resolution measurements that will allow a greater understanding of the aerodynamics. In this work, Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry (S-PIV) is used in a new application to characterize the distorted flow at the outlet of complex intake. A suite of measurements and analyses for two S-duct configurations across a range of inlet Mach numbers are presented. The work demonstrates the feasibility of using SPIV techniques for determining the flow field at the exit of convoluted intakes with a higher spatial resolution than typical pressure measurements. Analysis of the distortion descriptors quantifies the dependency upon the S-duct configuration and highlights that the more high-offset duct generates greater levels of swirl distortion relative to the low-offset configuration. Distortion maps show that the flow is highly unsteady with a characteristic switching of the swirling flow. The results provide a new dataset which shows that the conventional assessments based on time-averaged data substantially underestimates the swirl distortion level and that the less frequent distortion events give rise to more potentiallysignificant threats to the compression system. This paper presents the development of an integrated approach which targets the aerodynamic design of separate-jet exhaust systems for future gas-turbine aero-engines. The proposed framework comprises a series of fundamental modeling theories which are applicable to engine performance simulation, parametric geometry definition, viscous/compressible flow solution, and design space exploration (DSE). A mathematical method has been developed based on class-shape transformation (CST) functions for the geometric design of axisymmetric engines with separate-jet exhausts. Design is carried out based on a set of standard nozzle design parameters along with the flow capacities established from zero-dimensional (0D) cycle analysis. The developed approach has been coupled with an automatic mesh generation and a Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) flow-field solution method, thus forming a complete aerodynamic design tool for separate-jet exhaust systems. The employed aerodynamic method has initially been validated against experimental measurements conducted on a small-scale turbine powered simulator (TPS) nacelle. The developed tool has been subsequently coupled with a comprehensive DSE method based on Latin-hypercube sampling. The overall framework has been deployed to investigate the design space of two civil aero-engines with separate-jet exhausts, representative of current and future architectures, respectively. The inter-relationship between the exhaust systems' thrust and discharge coefficients has been thoroughly quantified. The dominant design variables that affect the aerodynamic performance of both investigated exhaust systems have been determined. A comparative evaluation has been carried out between the optimum exhaust design subdomains established for each engine. The proposed method enables the aerodynamic design of separate-jet exhaust systems for a designated engine cycle, using only a limited set of intuitive design variables. Furthermore, it enables the quantification and correlation of the aerodynamic behavior of separate-jet exhaust systems for designated civil aero-engine architectures. Therefore, it constitutes an enabling technology toward the identification of the fundamental aerodynamic mechanisms that govern the exhaust system performance for a user-specified engine cycle.
The unsteady distorted flow fields generated within convoluted intakes can have a detrimental effect on the stability of an aero-engine. The frequency signature in the distorted flow field is of key importance to the engine's response. In this work, time-resolved particle image velocimetry is used to obtain the three-component velocity field at the outlet plane of two S-duct intake configurations for a range of inlet Mach numbers. Proper orthogonal decomposition of the time-resolved velocity data allows the identification of the main frequencies and coherent structures in the flow. The most energetic unsteady structures comprise an in-plane vortex switching mode, associated with a lateral oscillation of the main loss region, and a vertical oscillation of the main loss region. The switching structure occurs at a frequency of St=0.42 and 0.32 for the high and low offset ducts, respectively. The vertical perturbation is associated with a more broadband spectrum between approximately St=0.6-1.0 and St=0.26-1.0 for the high and low offset configurations, respectively. The determined frequencies for these main unsteady flow structures are within the range, which is expected to be detrimental to the operating stability of an aero-engine. The results provide a novel, time-resolved dataset of synchronous velocity measurements of high spatial resolution that enables analysis of the unsteady flows at the exit of complex aero-engine intakes.
The unsteady distorted flow fields generated within convoluted aero-engine intakes can compromise the engine performance and operability. Therefore there is a need for a better understanding of the complex characteristics of the distorted flow at the exit of S-shaped intakes. This work presents a detailed analysis of the unsteady swirl distortion based on synchronous, high spatial resolution measurements using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. Two S-duct configurations with different centerline offsets are investigated. The high offset duct shows greater levels of dynamic and steady swirl distortion and a notably greater tendency towards bulk swirl patterns associated with high swirl distortion. More discrete distortion patterns with locally high swirl levels and the potential to impact the engine operability are identified. The most energetic coherent structures of the flow field are observed using proper orthogonal decomposition. A switching mode is identified which promotes the alternating swirl switching mechanism and is mostly associated with the occurrence of potent bulk swirl events. A vertical mode which characterizes a perturbation of the vertical velocity field promotes most of the twin swirl flow distortion topologies. This paper describes current progress in the development of methods to assess aero-engine airframe installation effects. The aerodynamic characteristics of isolated intakes, a typical transonic transport aircraft as well as a combination of a through-flow nacelle and aircraft configuration have been evaluated. The validation task for an isolated engine nacelle is carried out with concern for the accuracy in the assessment of intake performance descriptors such as mass flow capture ratio and drag rise Mach number. The necessary mesh and modelling requirements to simulate the nacelle aerodynamics are determined. Furthermore, the validation of the numerical model for the aircraft is performed as an extension of work that has been carried out under previous drag prediction research programmes. The validation of the aircraft model has been extended to include the geometry with through flow nacelles. Finally, the assessment of the mutual impact of the through flow nacelle and aircraft aerodynamics was performed. The drag and lift coefficient breakdown has been presented in order to identify the component sources of the drag associated with the engine installation. The paper concludes with an assessment of installation drag for through-flow nacelles and the determination of aerodynamic interference between the nacelle and the aircraft.
