In vitro antimicrobial properties of plant essential oils thymus vulgaris, cymbopogon citratus and laurus nobilis against five important foodborne pathogens Propriedades antibacterianas in vitro de óleos essenciais de thymus vulgaris, cymbopogon citratus e laurus nobilis contra cinco importantes bactérias patogênicas veiculadas por alimentosAlessandra Farias MILLEZI 1 *, Danila Soares CAIXETA 1 , Diogo Francisco ROSSONI 2 , Maria das Graças CARDOSO 3 , Roberta Hilsdorf PICCOLI 4 IntroductionThe essentials oils are products of the secondary plants' metabolism and several of them are used as seasonings and medicines. They can be defined as complex mixtures of volatile, lipophilic, odoriferous, and liquid substances (SIMÕES; SPITZER, 2004). The essential oils play an important role in plant protection such as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, insecticidal properties and also against herbivore attack. Currently, 3.000 essentials oils are known, 300 of which are commercially important in the pharmaceutical, agronomic, food, sanitation, cosmetics, and perfume industries (BAKKALI et al., 2008).The antimicrobial properties of condiment and medicinal plant essential oils have been stirring interest from the perspective of their making up an alternative to the use of chemical additives in foods. In recent years, it has been related that some essentials oils are capable of inhibiting bacteria of food origin and prolonging the shelf life of processed foods (KIM et al., 1995;SMITH-PALMER;STEWART;FYFE, 1998). Due to their hydrophobic characteristic, these compounds act over the lipids of the cell membrane modifying its structure and turning it more permeable, allowing the passage of ions and or other substances.
Essential oils are plant secondary metabolites with different biological properties, such as activity against microorganisms, being of major interest to the food industry. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of these oils for various bacteria should be determined. The MICvaries according to the oil used by the major compounds and phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of the bacteria. In this research, the essential oils of the plants Satureja montana L., Cymbopogon nardus L. and Citrus limonia Osbeck were chemically characterized and the MIC of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureusATCC 2592 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, determined. The MICfor all oils against E. coli was 1.5%, and S. aureus was sensitive to the concentration of 5.0% of S. montanaoil and tothe concentration of 1.5% of the essential oils of the other plants.Chemically, the major components ofthe S. montana, C. nardus and C.limonia Osbeck oils were respectively thymol, citronellal and limonene.
Management of contaminated areas by gas stations in Cuiabá, MatoGrosso, Brazil ABSTRACTThe commercialization of petroleum-based fuels is a potentially polluting activity. Environmental impacts are mainly due to tanker truck accidents and leaking underground storage tanks of gas stations. The management of contaminated sites aims to reduce risks to human health and environment through measures that provide knowledge regarding the characteristics of contaminated site and the impacts of contaminants, thus allowing the most appropriate intervention to be determined. This paper analyzed the environmental licensing process of the Cuiaba-MT gas stations in order to present an overview of the gas stations responsible for some type of environmental contamination, since the investigation of liabilities is required for this license. One hundred and thirty-six licensing processes were analyzed, and it was found that 17 of these reported some type of contamination in soil and/or groundwater. The main contaminants were Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene an...

Microplastics (<5 mm) can have negative and deleterious environmental effects. However, the scarce information on the levels of microplastics and the factors underlying their input in wetlands, limits the understating of the vulnerability of these ecosystems to microplastics. To contribute closing this important information gap, the concentration (items/m−2), size and the variables related to the distribution of microplastics in fluvial sediments of the Cuiabá River, a tributary of the Pantanal, the world largest flooded Savanna and a UNESCO World Heritage were investigated. The mean microplastic level was 576.8 ± 577.8 items/m−2 of sediments which were mainly fragments (309.0 ± 319.6 items/m−2) and fibers (267.8 ± 339.9 items/m−2). The maximum level was 1938.8 items/m−2 found in the urban stretch of the sister cities of Cuiabá and Várzea Grande, the largest urban agglomeration in the study area. Unexpectedly, the composition of the microplastic with highest average level (240.7 ± 310.4 items/m−2), a blue synthetic fiber, could not be unequivocally determined by RAMAN spectrometry. Its complex composition includes Pb, Li and Nb, suggesting it may derive from electronic waste. Polypropylene (159.2 ± 133.4 items/m−2) and Polyvinyl Chloride (104.6 ± 217.2 items/m−2) were the second and third polymers with higher average levels. The average size of microplastics particles in sampling sites ranged from 0.18 mm to 1.74 mm. Microplastic concentration was positively related to urban areas. Similarly, microplastics particles size decreased with distance from urban areas. These results suggest that urban areas along the Cuiabá River, with poor waste management, are a major source of microplastic pollution in the Pantanal floodplain and that electronic waste might contribute significantly to this contamination. This study highlights the importance of adequate waste management in cities to limit microplastic contamination in areas of ecological importance, such as the Pantanal.
ABSTRACT:The indoor air quality has gained attention in recent decades, due to the high residence time of the occupants in these environments and consequently greater exposure to pathogenic pollutants. The objective of this research was to evaluate the microbiological quality of the indoor air of a library located in the city of Cuiaba-MT, using the spontaneous sedimentation method and impaction on solid medium. In short, the results for temperature and humidity in most sampling sites and sampling period, showed off the standards established by legislation in force. Regarding the bacteriological quality it was found that for both methods used, 97% of the isolates were presented as Gram positive. On the other hand, in fungal count can be observed that compared to Indoor / Outdoor in most of the points was higher than the recommended growth. Among the various fungi isolated, it was found the presence of Aspergillus sp. and Penicillium sp. Thus, in places of learning and intellectual development, social and personal as the library, the need to implement preventive measures and protection of all its patrons as regards the issue of Indoor Air Quality.
