The study object is metacognition as an educational practice in nursing. The intention was to analyze how metacognition contributes to the educational process in nursing. To that end, the philosophies of Patricia Benner and Virginia Henderson were consulted. The subject of metacognition was approached through its concept and metacognitive strategies, and by associating metacognition and nursing. It was concluded that the effectiveness of learning depends not only on experience and intellectual ability, but also the acquisition of cognitive and metacognitive strategies that enable students to plan and monitor their performance, thus fostering awareness of the processes used in order to learn. One must learn how to learn.
