In a context of increased world population and imbalanced access to resources, the concept of food waste has gained increased attention in the past years. The waste of food has a negative impact on the economy, the society and the environment. In order to reduce the quantities of wasted food, it is important to understand the factors and the situations in which food waste occurs. Several studies have shown that food waste happens mostly at the consumer level and that it is determined by a wide range of factors, such as socio-demographic characteristics and consumption patterns. The objective of this paper is to determine the impact of the national culture on the quantity of wasted fruit and vegetables. Based on secondary data, the panel regression analysis was applied for 28 European countries with the purpose of determining the influence of the cultural dimensions as described by Hofstede on the quantities of wasted fruit and vegetables. The results of the research show that the uncertainty avoidance of a culture complemented by the indulgence index influences the quantity of wasted fruit and vegetables, confirming that certain characteristics of the national culture are factors that affect the quantity of wasted food.
The relation between the personality of consumers and their buying behavior has been a very much debated topic in the field of marketing researches. Several studies have shown that personality has a significant influence on the way consumer behave in their social and economic environment, in the way they approach and accept innovations and new developed products or even in their shopping behavior. This paper presents the influence of the Myers-Briggs personality dichotomies on the impulsive consumer behavior and the openness to buy newly launched products. Discriminant analysis was used to evaluate primary collected data and the core results show that extroverted, feeling-based decision-makers and perception oriented persons have more frequently an impulsive buying behavior at shopping sessions. Extroverts and intuition based consumers are more open to new products. The temptation to buy attractive unplanned products is higher for extroverts, feeling based decision makers and perceiving persons. Despite of this, none of the personality dichotomies influences the amount and care for spending in stores, this being influenced by other independent factors, mainly economic ones.
Non-invasive bioengineering technologies are constantly being developed, as they can provide useful insights and contribute to the improvement of medical care and scientific education. The purpose of this study was to assess skin viscoelasticity using the suction chamber method in patients with allergic contact dermatitis vs. healthy subjects, before and after applying a moisturizer safety testing cream. This was a prospective controlled study over a 3-year period (March 2016-March 2019), with 81 subjects being divided in two balanced groups: Patients with allergic contact dermatitis and healthy subjects, respectively. The skin viscoelasticity was determined for all subjects with Cutometer ® , using the suction method, by performing a dynamic assessment of parameters before and after applying a moisturizing cream. The results indicate a decrease in the elasticity parameters in both groups, indicating an improvement of the elastic properties under the treatment. Skin capacity to return to its previous form after the deformation, i.e., pure elasticity and biological elasticity, showed overall elevated values in the group with contact dermatitis, demonstrating the efficacy of the emollient cream after applying it for 28 days (increase by 11.7 and 4.9% respectively, compared with baseline, when patients had dry, untreated skin). However, in healthy subjects, these parameters do not achieve important values, but they remain rather stable over time with a very slight improvement (6.6% after 28 days). The Cutometer is an easy to use, efficient and widely used instrument for measurements in studies that perform a quantitative assessment of the effectiveness of different formulations intended for application on the skin.
BACKGROUNDCardiac tumors are rare and complex entities. Surgery represents the cornerstone of therapy, while the role of adjuvant treatment remains unclear and, in case of relapse or metastatic disease, the prognosis is very poor. Lack of prospective, randomized clinical trials hinders the generation of high level evidence for the optimal diagnostic workup and multimodal treatment of cardiac sarcomas. Herein, we describe the multidisciplinary clinical management and molecular characterization of a rare case of cardiac myxofibrosarcoma in an elderly woman.CASE SUMMARYA 73-year-old woman presented signs and symptoms of acute left-sided heart failure. Imaging examination revealed a large, left atrial mass. With suspicion of a myxoma, she underwent surgery, and symptoms were promptly relieved. Histology showed a cardiac myxofibrosarcoma, a rare histotype of cardiac sarcoma. Eight months later, disease unfortunately relapsed, and after a multidisciplinary discussion, a chemotherapy with doxorubicin and then gemcitabine was started, achieving partial radiologic and complete metabolic response, which was maintained up to 2 years and is still present. This report is focused on the entire clinical path of our patient from diagnosis to follow-up, through surgery and strategies adopted at relapse. Moreover, due to their rarity, very little is known about the molecular landscape of myxofibrosarcomas. Thus, we also performed and described preliminary genome analysis of the tumor tissue to get further insight on mechanisms involved in tumor growth, and to possibly unveil new clinically actionable targets.CONCLUSIONWe report a case of cardiac myxofibrosarcoma that achieved a very good prognosis due to an integrated surgical, cardiac and oncologic treatment strategy.
