Photosynthesis and photoinhibition in mahogany and acariquara as a function of irradiance and leaf temperatureAbstract -Photoinhibition may be exacerbated by stress factors such as high temperature. The aim of the work was to determine the effects of temperature and irradiance on photosynthesis and photoinhibition in mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) and acariquara (Minquartia guianensis Aubl.). Also to assess the effect of irradiance and temperature on the recovery from photoinhibition at low irradiance. Sapling were grown at low irradiance: 0.20 mol m , and two temperatures, 32 e 38ºC. At 32ºC, light saturated photosynthesis (A max ) was greater in mahogany than in acariquara. Mahogany plants exposed to 38ºC showed a consistent decline in carbon uptake, and after 50 min both species showed the same photosynthetic rates. In saplings exposed to 32ºC, increase in irradiance, from 1,000 to 1,700 µmol m , the rise in temperature, from 32 to 38ºC, did not increase photoinhibition. After 72 hours at low irradiance, recovery from photoinhibition was 80% in acariquara and 89% in mahogany. There was no effect of leaf temperature on photoinhibition.Index terms: Amazonia, fluorescence, Minquartia guianensis, photochemical efficiency, stomatal conductance, Swietenia macrophylla.
Pole diameter and wood density are variables commonly used in allometric equations to estimate tree biomass and carbon stocks in tropical forests. The effect of variations in tree water content on pole diameters is often disregarded in allometric equations. This study aimed to determine the effect of rainfall seasonality on tree growth, stem wood and bark water content and to assess the relationship between water content and wood density (dry mass to fresh mass volume ratio) in 120 trees from 28 species in a terra-firme rain forest in the central Amazon. In 2006, stem wood and bark water content were gravimetrically determined in the dry season (August-September) and rainy season (April-May). In the same year, growth in diameter was measured at monthly intervals in the 120 trees (DBH ≥ 10 cm) with dendrometric bands previously adapted to the tree. Mean wood water content was lower in the dry season than the rainy season. On the contrary, bark water content was higher in the dry season than in the rainy season. Wood densities higher than 0.75 g cm -3 were found in 64.3% of the trees. Trees with denser woods grew slower and had lower stem water content. Monthly rainfall did not affect tree growth in diameter, which was contrary to our initial expectation on the effect of rainfall seasonality on tree growth in central Amazonia. This finding supports the hypothesis that in central Amazonia, the mild dry season is not long enough to deplete soil water beyond the reach of the root system, which allows the trees to grow at quite constant rates over the year.
We assessed the effect of the exposure to full sunlight (5, 35, and 120 min, i.e. T 5 , T 35 , and T 120 ) on fluorescence parameters of two young tropical trees, Swietenia macrophylla, a gap-demanding species, and Minquartia guianensis, a shade tolerant species. Fluorescence parameters (F 0 , F m , F v /F m ) were recorded before treatments and after the transition to low irradiance (LI). Recovery from photoinhibition (measured as F v /F m ) was monitored for 24 h at LI. In Swietenia, an almost complete restoration of the F v /F m values occurred in T 5 and T 35 plants, when a rise in F 0 was observed after the transition to LI. This was inferred as indicative of dynamic photoinhibition. T 120 led to a decline in F 0 in Minquartia, but not in Swietenia. The plants of both species were unable to recovery from photoinhibition after 24 h at LI, when F 0 declined or remained unchanged. This was interpreted as indicative of chronic photoinhibition. Compared with Swietenia, Minquartia was more susceptible to photoinhibition, as indicated by lower F v /F m values.
High irradiance may reduce the productivity of tropical plants by exacerbating photoinhibition of photosynthesis, particularly in the case of shade-adapted plants. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cloud cover on the fluorescence characteristics and photoinhibition on saplings of manwood (Minquartia guianensis Aubl.). Three-year-old saplings were exposed to full irradiance either on clear days (10, 45 and 90 min) or under overcast conditions (120, 180, and 420 min). Changes in the population of functional photosystem II (PSII), the initial (F o ) and maximum fluorescences (F m ), and the F v /F m ratio (maximum potential quantum yield of PSII) were monitored after plant exposure to full irradiance and during recovery (within 48 h) at low light intensity. Although photoinhibition of PSII (F v /F m ) was determined by the number of photons reaching the leaf surface (photon fluence), cloudiness tended to reduce the photoinhibitory effect of irradiance. F o increased with fluence on cloudy days and was unaffected by irradiance on clear days, except for a sharp rise during the first 10 min of exposure to full sunlight. For a given photon fluence, F m was lower on clear days. Recovery from photoinhibition was similar in both light environments. Although photon fluence is the preponderant factor determining the extent of photoinhibition, cloudiness might alleviate the photoinhibitory effect of irradiance.

(Lamiaceae) plantadas em Jataí-GO.
The knowledge of how trees respond to microclimate variability is important in the face of climate changes. The objectives of this study were to examine the variation in wood water content (WWC) and bark water content (BWC) in Amazonian trees, as well as to assess the effect of microclimatic variability on monthly diameter growth rates (DGR). We extracted a core sample from each of 120 trees (28 species) and determined WWC and BWC on a fresh matter basis. DGR was measured monthly during the 12 months of 2007. The effect of microclimatic variability on DGR was analyzed by redundancy analysis. Average BWC and WWC were 53.4% and 34.7%, respectively, with a large variation in stem water content among species (BWC = 36.2−67.1%; WWC = 26.4−50.8%). There was no significant relationship between stem diameter and WWC or BWC, nor between DGR and wood density (p > 0.05). However, wood density was negatively correlated with WWC (r s = −0.69, p < 0.001). The high BWC emphasizes the importance of the bark tissue in Amazonian trees. Contrary to expectations, variability of monthly irradiance, rainfall and temperature had no effect on DGR (p > 0.20). The unresponsiveness of DGR to microclimatic variability, even in an above-average rainy year such as 2007, indicates that other parts of the tree may have greater priority than the stem for carbon allocation during the dry season.
