Twenty adult partridges Rhynchotus rufescens were used for morphologic and histological study. The materials destined to the morphologic study were collected and the lengths of the glandular stomach and of the muscular stomach were measured. For the histological study, fragments of the glandular stomach (gastric proventriculus, Ventriculus glandularis) and of the muscular stomach (gastric ventriculus, Ventriculus muscularis) were stained routinely with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Masson’s trichrome stain. Glandular stomach is prolonged, with a fusiform format toward craniocaudalis and for the left. It presents a mean length of 3.20cm in the females and 3.65cm in the males. Gastric proventriculus is composed by several lobes and glands. The mucosa is formed by a simple cubic epithelium, which is much folded. Muscular stomach has the format of a biconvex lens, with 4.30cm and 4.35cm of mean length for the females and male, respectively. The mucosa is formed by folds lined by columnar cells and the mucus that forms the cuticula. There are crypts in the base of the folds. Closely, there is a lamina propria and a thick smooth muscle layer, which is placed according to the format of the organ. A dense portion of connective tissue constitutes the serosa, mixed by some smooth muscle cells.

Lengths of the beak and of the tongue were evaluated, and histologic sections of the tongue were stained routinely with hematoxylin-eosin (HE), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Masson’s trichrome stain, later analyzed and described. The beak of the partridge of both sexes are curved, flat, hard and with a sharp extremity, with mean length of 4.90cm for the females and 4,80 for the males. The tongue is characterized by a triangular format with mean length of 1cm for both sexes, and its extremity is presented as a sharp format. Organization of the tongue tissue presents a stratified squamous epithelium with filiform papillae in all surface, mucous glands with ducts that project to the epithelium surface and a hyaline cartilage in the whole length of the tongue, which lays on the skeletal musculature that is guided in several directions.

SUMMARYA literature review on the structures that compose the ocular system of domestic animals is presented in this study. The eyeball is a specialized organ whose primary function is to capture and focus the light onto the photosensitive retina. It comprises three concentrically arranged layers: an outer layer or fibrous tunic, containing the sclera and cornea; a middle coat or vascular layer, comprising the choroid, ciliary body and iris; and the inner coat or nervous layer, which is formed by the retina. In addition, there are the lens and the structures that protect and move the eyeball, such as the orbital fascia, ocular muscles, eyelids, conjunctiva and lacrimal apparatus. Each component can be affected by various diseases, which the veterinarian should be able to intervene in order to preserve this important sense organ. KEY-WORDS:Eyeball. Veterinary Ophthalmology. Vision. RESUMOEste trabalho teve como objetivo realizar uma revisão de literatura sobre as estruturas que compõem o sistema ocular dos animais domésticos. O bulbo ocular é um órgão especializado cuja função primária consiste em captar e focalizar a luz sobre a retina fotossensível. É formado por três túnicas dispostas concentricamente: a camada externa ou túnica fibrosa, que consiste em esclera e córnea; a camada média ou túnica vascular, constituída pela coróide, pelo corpo ciliar e pela íris; e a camada interna ou túnica nervosa, que é formada pela retina. Além desses envoltórios, há o cristalino ou lente e as estruturas que protegem e move o bulbo do olho, que são as fáscias orbitárias, os músculos oculares, as pálpebras, a conjuntiva e o aparelho lacrimal. RESUMOA urolitíase obstrutiva em pequenos ruminantes é uma doença metabólica de etiologia multifatorial com distribuição mundial. A elevação da concentração urinária de solutos, minerais ionizados (cristaloides) que formam cristais insolúveis é citada por alguns autores como o fator mais importante. Assim, o conhecimento do perfil mineral dos animais submetidos a dietas calculogênicas e a composição química dos urólitos tornam-se ferramentas eficazes na prevenção da doença. Neste estudo, foram utilizados 14 ovinos hígidos, machos (não castrados), da raça Santa Inês, com idade aproximada de 90 dias, distribuídos em dois grupos (G1 -sem vitamina C e G2 -com vitamina C) e alimentados com dieta calculogênica. A análise dos perfis minerais, séricos e urinários revelou completo desbalanceamento na relação entre concentrações de cálcio, fósforo e magnésio, havendo elevação expressiva do fósforo e do magnésio e diminuição substancial do cálcio. Este estudo correlacionou os tempos de jejum sólido pré-anestésico com alterações nos níveis de glicemia plasmática, cortisol sérico, estado clínico e equilíbrio ácido-base em cães submetidos a anestesia geral inalatória. Utilizaram-se oito animais, adultos, sem raça definida, distribuídos de acordo com o período de jejum sólido: Grupo 1 (12 horas), Grupo 2 (18 horas) e Grupo 3 (24 horas). Foi acompanhado o esvaziamento do conteúdo gástrico e em seguida, todos animais foram submetidos ao mesmo procedimento anestésico. Freqüência cardíaca e respiratória, temperatura retal, tempo de reperfusão capilar, grau de hidratação e pressão arterial não-invasiva foram mensurados previamente à administração de acepromazina, 10 minutos decorridos da mesma e a cada 10 minutos durante a manutenção anestésica, incluindo-se ETCO2; valores hemogasométricos (pH, PaCO2, PaO2, HCO3, CO2 total, SatO2, déficit de base), glicêmicos e de cortisol sérico foram avaliados previamente à MPA e a cada trinta minutos durante a manutenção anestésica. No período de recuperação anestésica, novas dosagens glicêmicas e de cortisol foram realizadas. Constataram-se poucas alterações cardiocirculatórias e respiratórias durante a anestesia, não havendo interferência dos diferentes tempos de jejum. Os animais com 12 horas de jejum pré-anestésico apresentaram glicemia mais elevada do que os demais grupos, no período de recuperação anestésica. As concentrações de cortisol não foram afetadas pelo jejum. O jejum pré-anestésico sólido, independente do tempo de duração, caracterizou um quadro de discreta alcalose respiratória. Todos os animais apresentaram-se em bom estado clínico nos três grupos. Recomenda-se jejum pré-anestésico sólido de 18 horas para garantir ausência completa de conteúdo alimentar sólido no estômago.

Bovine dermatophilosis is a dermatitis characterized by typical focal or localized lesions with “paintbrush” aspect and occasionally as disseminated cutaneous disease. We report the case of a one-year-old Nelore female with history of chronic cutaneous disseminated lesions that appeared immediately after a rainfall period. Serous to purulent exudates, hair with tufted appearance, hyperkeratotic, non-pruritic, hardened, yellowish to brown, and coalescent crusty lesions were observed distributed all over its body. Removal of the crusts revealed ulcerated or hemorrhagic areas, with irregular elevated crusts like “paintbrush”. Microbiological diagnosis enabled the identification of a microorganism, the Dermatophilus congolensis. Despite disseminated and chronic lesions, we obtained a successful therapy with parenteral therapy using long-acting tetracycline based on modified in vitro disk diffusion test. The present report highlights success therapy in uncommon generalized bovine dermatophilosis with selection of first-choice drugs based on modified in vitro susceptibility test, and need of responsible use of antimicrobials in livestock.
