MORPHOLOGY OF OCULAR SYSTEM OF DOMESTIC ANIMALS / Morfologia do sistema ocular dos animais domésticos.

Abstract: SUMMARYA literature review on the structures that compose the ocular system of domestic animals is presented in this study. The eyeball is a specialized organ whose primary function is to capture and focus the light onto the photosensitive retina. It comprises three concentrically arranged layers: an outer layer or fibrous tunic, containing the sclera and cornea; a middle coat or vascular layer, comprising the choroid, ciliary body and iris; and the inner coat or nervous layer, which is formed by the retina. “…The superficial gland of the third eyelid in the Sulawesi bear cuscus was positioned between the medial rectus muscle and the ventral rectus muscle of the eyeball and was partially covered by the ventral oblique muscle of the eyeball surrounded by a large periorbital fat body. A similar gland location was found in other animal species (Aldana Marcos et al, 2002;Cazacu, 2010;Dyce et al, 1996;Kempster et al, 2002;Klećkowska-Nawrot & Dzięgiel, 2007;Klećkowska-Nawrot, Nowaczyk, Goździewska-Harłajczuk, Krasucki, et al 2015;Leite, Oliveira, & Baraldi-Artoni, 2013;Martin et al, 1988;Mohammadpour, 2008;Nickel et al, 2004;Nuyttens & Simoens, 1995;Pinard et al, 2003;Schlegel et al, 2001). The superficial gland of the third eyelid has also been recognised in four Australian marsupials: the shortnosed bandicoot (Isoodon macrourus, Peramelidae), the yellow-footed antechinus (Antechinus flavipes, Dasyuridae), the eastern native cat (Dasyurus viverrinus, Dasyuridae) and the tiger cat (Dasyurus maculatus, Dasyuridae) (Sakai & van Lennep, 1984).…”
