Montenegro seeks its future perspectives in tourism. And there are good reasons for that: The country was considered to be the fastest growing tourism market worldwide in 2007. Notwithstanding a slight decrease during the last years, tourism is still seen as a crucial factor for future economic development. This seems to be a viable option if we consider Montenegro's natural potential, its beneficial position on the Adriatic coastline and the experience in tourism gained in the many years since the 1970s. These dynamic developments were motivation enough to explore tourism in Montenegro in a research project with strong empirical evidence, organised as cooperation between Universities from Germany, Albania, Montenegro and Serbia. Our empirical approach included semi-structured, flexible interviews with different types of stakeholders. Since tourism in Montenegro is still almost entirely limited to the coast, we chose three coastal hot-spots in tourism, namely Kotor, Budva and Ulcinj. Our results show that the current development in tourism can surely be considered as progressive and dynamic. But it is also strongly affected by multiple polarisations and divergent trends. There is a need for infrastructural upgrades in the mass tourism sector, which is for the most part a low budget market with very difficult future perspectives. At the same time, there is a small but growing number of very exclusive offers, often seen as the vanguard of Montenegro's future as an upper class tourists' destination. All in all, the economic bias towards coastal tourism involves the risk of an increase in the already strong spatial disparities, leaving behind a mountainous hinterland with a shrinking economy and population.

Migration processes are amongst the most relevant issues in the geography of the Baltic States. The authors analyse the changes in migration patterns from the early 1990s until today. The focus of the study is the recent trends of migratory movements in the case of Latvia. Due to the country's economic recession, migration has accelerated in the recent years. Empirical results show the response of the migration system to the changing internal factors and external influences in the times of transition and global crisis. Long-term emigration exacerbates the problem of demographic change in Latvia.

Deutschland hat die EU-Ratspräsidentschaft in einem schwierigen Umfeld übernommen. Seit den ablehnenden Referenden zum Verfassungsvertrag in Frankreich und den Niederlanden steckt die Europäische Union in einer Krise, aus der sich auch nach eineinhalb Jahren kein richtiger Ausweg abzeichnet. 1 Kernproblem ist hierbei die ungelöste Frage einer grundlegenden EU-Reform, deren Dringlichkeit sich mit dem am ersten Januar 2007 erfolgten Beitritt Rumäniens und Bulgariens weiter verschärft hat. Allerdings haben die Referenden auch gezeigt, dass Europa auf nicht unerhebliche Akzeptanzprobleme in der Bevölkerung stößt, die sich auf Dauer als problematisch für den Integrationsprozess erweisen könnten. Entsprechend dem von der Europäischen Kommission zur Überwindung der Akzeptanzkrise propagierten "double-track-approach" gilt es nunmehr, neben Versuchen zur Lösung der Verfassungsfrage konkrete und bürgernahe Politikvorhaben in die Tat umzusetzen (Ansatz des "Europe des projets" 2 ). Immer wieder genannt werden hierbei zum Beispiel die Bereiche europäische Energiepolitik, Asyl-und Einwanderungspolitik oder die weitere Ausgestaltung der Lissabonstrategie. Nimmt man hinzu, dass auch in der Außen-und Sicherheitspolitik und im Bereich der EU-Nachbarschaftspolitik große Herausforderungen anstehen, ergibt sich für die deutsche Ratspräsidentschaft ein erheblicher Handlungsbedarf.Verkompliziert wird diese Ausgangslage durch eine Phase der Führungsschwäche in Europa. Frankreich befindet sich im Wahlkampf, von Großbritannien sind vor der Amtsübergabe Tony Blairs auf seinen Nachfolger keine Impulse zu erwarten und in den Niederlanden haben die letzten Wahlen ein Patt zwischen den politischen Lagern ergeben. Die polnische Regierung verfolgt europapolitisch einen Kurs, den man bestenfalls als eigenwillig bezeichnen kann; in Ungarn dauert die Regierungskrise an und die slowakische Regierungskoalition hat sich durch die Einbeziehung der ultrarechten SNS (Slowakische Nationalpartei) in Misskredit gebracht. In dieser Situation sind die Anforderungen und Erwartungen an die deutsche Ratspräsidentschaft besonders hoch. Pointierter könnte man auch sagen, dass die deutsche Bundesregierung zurzeit die einzig wirkliche Kraft ist, die es schaffen kann, dass Europa gemeinsam gelingt. 3 Das ähnlich lautende an den Gemeinschaftssinn appellierende Programm der deutschen Ratspräsidentschaft, das an die Arbeiten der vorangegangenen Präsidentschaften und die Jahresplanung der Kommission anknüpft, beinhaltet weiterreichende Zielsetzungen unter anderem in der "Gestaltung der wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und ökologischen Zukunft Euro-1

The geographicity of refugee migration and asylum in receiving countries combines two perspectives of analysis. One is represented by uprooted, somehow alienated migrants, the other by the spatiality of refugee camps and reception centres as places and spaces of the others in the sense of a “non-place”: Sites of transit without any identity, ‘footloose’ in Augéan terms, just coexisting in their local context. Thus, this chapter uses a broad empirical approach and refers to the phenomenon’s spatial as well as social and individual elements. The empirical field is a reception and accommodation centre that was opened in 2015 in a former military base in the town of Bamberg, Germany. At that time, the discussion of political framing at the state level led to a severe crisis in German politics. On the local level, a public discourse unfolded around the centre, ranging from its capacity and residents, to the residents’ well-being in terms of legal treatment, discrimination, medical care and schooling. The initial group of residents there were, in the vast majority, migrants from Western Balkan countries applying for asylum. Starting in 2016, the structure and origin of the residents changed fundamentally. Since then, the origin of residents has become more and more heterogeneous. An analysis of spatial behaviour and spatial representation showed a broad variety of information on space and place of temporary living. Different perceptions, various ways of coping with the locality and the short duration of stay represent the fluid character of the reception centre and its residents nowadays.
