A klasszikus Athént megosztó egyik legfőbb törésvonal a Kr. e. 340-es és 330- as években a makedónkérdés volt: hogyan viszonyuljon a szövetségi rendszerét nélkülöző polis a II. Philippos alatt felemelkedő és idővel Hellas egészét fenyegető makedón királysághoz?1 Bár a mai kutatás már rég nem osztja fel hősies ellenállókra és gyáva megalkuvókra a kor politikusait, továbbra is jellemző a szakirodalomban, hogy a szónokokat a makedónbarát vagy éppen a makedónellenes irányzat tagjainak tekintik. De vajon van-e létjogosultsága e címkéknek? Jelen tanulmány azt vizsgálja a 330-as évek viszonylatában, hogy a vezető „makedónbarát” szónokok (elsősorban Aischinés, Phókión és Démadés) közös platformon álló és együttműködő ágensek voltak-e, vagy inkább önálló véleményvezérek; illetve hogy egyáltalán beszélhetünk-e ekkor makedónpárti irányzatról Athénban.
Az athéni szónok Aischinés életének van egy vitathatatlanul érdekes, ám meglehetősen kétes hitelű mozzanata, amelyről nem emlékezik meg az antik életrajzi hagyomány: Aischinés csodás epidaurosi gyógyulása.1 A ma ezzel összefüggésbe hozott felirat sokáig nem keltett különösebb feltűnést: az alig arasznyi széles, elkeskenyedő márványtöredéket a gortyni törvényszöveget is kiadó Johannes Baunack publikálta a Philologusban számos egyéb apró epidaurosi felirattal együtt 1895-ben.2 Baunack nyilvánvalóan nem pazarolt sok időt a töredék szövegének értelmezésére: közölte a méreteit (7,5×21×4,5 cm) és az első két sor megmaradt betűit.
Az kiegészítésből világos, hogy Baunack felismerte: dedikációs felirat töredékével van dolga, amelyet egy ismeretlen nevű athéni polgár állított. A harmadik sorban három betű felső maradványai után EI?N olvasatot feltételezett, de nem tudta istennévhez kapcsolni.3 E harmadik sor olvasata különösen a későbbi kiadások tükrében tűnik szerény teljesítménynek. Az Inscriptiones Graecae IV. kötetét szerkesztő Maximilian Fränkel ugyanis 1902-ben nemcsak a felirat rajzát mellékelte, de új olvasatot és teljesebb értelmezést is adott.
