The use of endless biomass sources form agricultural by-products for the renewable fuel synthesis has been being considered as the extremely useful works meeting the strict strategies of environment protection. In this work, 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) synthesized from available rice straw in Vietnam was mixing with fossil gasoline RON95 to determine and measure the key properties of DMF-gasoline RON95 blends based on corresponding ASTM standards in the consideration as a new alternative fuel for modern gasoline engines. Each 5% volume fraction of DMF was used for mixing purposes to create 21 samples with the change of DMF volume fractions from 0% to 100%. As a result, the linearization of density, octane number, and latent heat of vaporization was conducted; meanwhile, the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio, heating value, and self-ignition temperature of DMF-gasoline RON95 blends were also reported. This work provided the full properties of blends of DMF-gasoline RON95 blends based on experimental results. Achieved results can be used for the next steps to investigate the applicability of DMF-gasoline RON95 blends to practical experiments or simulation studies.
Today, humans are dealing with two urgent issues: energy security and environmental pollution and finding sources to replace traditional fuels such as gasoline and diesel that are part of human interest. Lignocellulose biomass can be obtained through a variety of basic chemicals or intermediates that generate energy, such as ethanol, butanol, and dimethylfuran. 2.5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is considered a potential alternative fuel because it is a water-insoluble substance used as an additive mixed with gasoline fuel. Formerly, there have been many studies on combustion engines and emissions properties using the DMF-gasoline blend, especially SI engines. However, there has been no published research about the optimal ignition timing advance of SI engines when using these blends. This paper present how to determine the optimal ignition timing advance of SI engines using DMF-gasoline combinations with AVL-Boost simulation software. The simulation conditions were set up at 50% load, and speed at 2500 and 3000 rpm using blends are DMF20, DMF30, and DMF40 (corresponding with the DMF ratio in DMF-gasoline blends is 20%, 30%, and 40% in volume). The simulation result shows that the optimal ignition timing advance of SI engines using DMF-gasoline blends at a 2500 and 3500 rpm speed corresponding with 23 and 31 crank angle degrees (CAD) (reduce 2CAD compare to when using pure gasoline). At these optimal ignition timing advances, the power engine, torque, and thermal efficiency (BTE) reach its maximum value, while the fuel consumption rate is also lowest.
Currently, the supply of diminishing fossil fuel reserves, and the rise in challenges in environmental, political and economic consequences have caused the great concerns in the development of modern society, these have been forced the policy makers and researchers to look for the renewable and green energy sources. Deemed as a promising renewable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF, chemical formula C6H8O) – a derivative of furan – has the potential to relieve the growing shortage of fossil fuels while satisfying the increase in global energy demand and minimizing the adverse effects of climate change. DMF can be used as a clean source of liquid transportation biofuel given the fact that it is directly obtained from biomass-derived carbohydrates. In reviewing current DMF production methods, this review paper analyzes and presents the comparison of catalytic performance in the conversion of biomass into DMF. In addition, the applicability of DMF in spark ignition (SI) engines is thoroughly analyzed based on the spray and flame, combustion, performance and emission characteristics of SI engines running on DMF compared with ethanol and gasoline. More interestingly, the knocking, lubrication, and wear characteristics in SI engines fueled with DMF are also evaluated and discussed. Nonetheless, further investigation on optimization strategies on DMF production process should be conducted prior to the initiation of large-scale commercialization as well as the application of DMF to real-world SI engines.
