This study aims to evaluate the effects of different drying methods on the physical properties, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity of extracts from Moringa oliefera L. (MO) leaf waste. The effects of two drying techniques, namely, sun drying (A1) and tray drying (A2), on the physical and antioxidant properties of the extracts obtained using three extracting solvents, i.e., water (b1), ethanol (b2), and ethyl acetate (b3), were investigated. These extracts were analyzed for their physicochemical and antioxidant properties. The antioxidant properties were determined with the Folin Ciocalteau, aluminum chloride, and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) was used to identify functional groups in the active compounds. It was found that the physical properties of the MO extract, including yield, pH, total solids, and color, showed significant differences for the two drying methods (p < 0.05). The b3 extract had the highest value for total phenolic contents, total flavonoid contents, and antioxidant activities, followed by b2 and b1, respectively, for both the sun drying and tray drying methods. There was a significant correlation between the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity (IC50). This study reveals that waste material from MO leaves could be utilized as an antioxidant agent, which is expected to reduce environmental pollution from the MO processing industry.
Consumption of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) and cocoa products is associated with numerous health benefits due to their high levels of polyphenols and antioxidant capacities. In this study, changes of total phenolic contents (TPC) and antioxidant capacities (AC) of raw cocoa powder at four maturity stages, under different fermentation methods and fermentation duration of cocoa beans were investigated. The TPC and AC were measured using Folin–Ciocalteu and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)/ABTS assay, respectively. In term of maturity stages, the powder of unfermented cocoa beans harvested from the stage one contained significantly lower levels of TPC (6.39 ± 0.02 g CE/100 g DM) and AC (26.82 ± 0.13 mol TE/100 g DM) than those from the beans harvested from the stage two, three and four. For all maturity stages studied, fermenting cocoa beans increased antioxidant capacities of the raw cocoa powder. Cocoa fermentation using the commercial enzyme Pectinex® Ultra SP-L resulted in lower TPC but higher AC in comparison to those treated without enzymes, however prolonged fermentation time in cocoa beans significantly reduced TPC and AC in the powder. Strong correlations between TPC and AC of fermented samples with (R = 0.923) and without enzyme supplement (R = 0.942) were obtained. Two-way anova analyses showed that changes of TPC and AC of cocoa beans were dependent on maturity stages, fermentation methods and fermentation duration. As a conclusion, fermentation of cocoa beans harvested at the maturity stage two and three was found to be optimum for the high levels of AC and TPC attainment; fermented beans with commercial enzyme could be utilized to reduce labor cost by shortening the fermentation duration.
Biohydrogen is a clean, renewable, sustainable energy resource due to the highest energy density among all fuels and its combustion has no contribution to the environmental pollution and climate change. Biohydrogen production depends on a number of nutritional and environmental variables. The present paper is to determine the optimum condition for enhanced hydrogen production by a fermentative hydrogen-producing bacterium (designated as Clostridium sp. Tr2) isolated from buffalo-dung in Vietnam. The response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to determine the mutual effects of glucose, yeast extract and iron concentration on its hydrogen production in a batch condition. RSM analysis showed that the highest hydrogen production potential (Ps) was obtained under the condition of 10.18 g L -1 glucose, 2.5 g L -1 yeast extract and 58 mg L -1 FeSO 4 .7H 2 O. All three factors had significant influences on the Ps. Glucose and iron concentration, yeast extract and iron concentration were interdependent or there was a significant interaction on Ps. Glucose and yeast extract concentration was slightly interdependent, or their interactive effect on Ps was not significant. Under optimum conditions, the maximum H 2 volume of 1080 ml (L medium) -1 were found after 22 h facultative anaerobic fermentation. The experiment results show that the RSM analysis with the central composite design was useful for optimizing the biohydrogen-producing process by newly isolated Clostridium sp. Tr2 in Vietnam.

Biosurfactants are amphiphilic molecules with effective surface-active and biological properties applicable to replace synthetic surfactant in petroleum industry. Interest in microbial surfactants has been steadily increasing in recent years, as they have numerous advantages compared to chemical surfactants including a lower toxicity, better environmental compatibility and effective properties at extreme temperature, pH levels and salinity. A crude oil-degrading yeast strain (C. 1214-BK14) was selected among the isolated strains as a potential biosurfactant-producer from producing oil wells at White Tiger oilfield because of its ability to produce biosurfactant using crude oil as a sole carbon source. An emulsification index (E24%) of 57% was obtained initially by Candida tropicalis 1214-BK14 in previous study. Therefore, the optimization of biosurfactant production of this strain for enhanced crude oil degradation was carried out based on central composite design and analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM). The biosurfactant production process was investigated as function of three independent variables: crude oil (2.5-5 % w/v), (NH4)2SO4 (0.35-0.45% w/v), and solution pH (5-8). RSM analysis showed that the optimum condition for the biosurfactant production by C. tropicalis 1214-BK14 were 6.1, 3.97% (w/v) and 0.37% (w/v) for pH, concentration of carbon (crude oil) and nitrogen substrate ((NH4)2SO4), respectively, with the emulsification index measured in the conditions was 80.2%. The total crude oil and C10-C43 alkanes degradation efficiency by this strain estimated using GC/MS were 89.8% and 80.47-98.58%, respectively. These results revealed that the strain Candida tropicalis 1214-BK14 exhibited a tremendous potential for contaminated-crude oil degradation and microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR).
