This paper extends the two-level hierarchical scheme in [l] for scheduling independently developed real-time applications with non-real-time applications in an open environment. The environment allows the schedulability of each real-time application to be validated independently of other applications in the system. The extended scheme removes the following two restrictions of the scheme in [l]: (1) real-time applications that are xheduled Preemptively must consist solely of periodic tasks and (2) applications must not share global resources (i.e., resources used by more than one application). Consequently, the extended scheme can accommodate a much broader spectrum of real-time applications.

This paper focuses on the problem of providing runtime support to real-time applications and non-real-time applications in an open system. It describes a two-level hierarchical priority-driven scheme for scheduling independently developed applications. The scheme allows the developer of each real-time application to validate the schedulability of the application independently of other applications. Once a r eal-time application is created and accepted by the open system, its schedulability is guaranteed r egardless of the behaviors of other applications that execute concurrently in the system.

Ubiquitous oxygen vacancies (Vo) existing in metallic compounds can activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for water treatment. However, under environmental conditions, especially oxygenated surroundings, the interactions between Vo and PMS as well as the organics degradation mechanism are still ambiguous. In this study, we provide a novel insight into the PMS activation mechanism over Vo-containing Fe−Co layered double hydroxide (LDH). Experimental results show that Vo/PMS is capable of selective degradation of organics via a single-electron-transfer nonradical pathway. Moreover, O 2 is firstly demonstrated as the most critical trigger in this system. Mechanistic studies reveal that, with abundant electrons confined in the vacant electron orbitals of Vo, O 2 is thermodynamically enabled to capture electrons from Vo to form O 2•− under the imprinting effect and start the activation process. Simultaneously, Vo becomes electron-deficient and withdraws the electrons from organics to sustain the electrostatic balance and achieve organics degradation (32% for Bisphenol A without PMS). Different from conventional PMS activation, under the collaboration of kinetics and thermodynamics, PMS is endowed with the ability to donate electrons to Vo as a reductant other than an oxidant to form 1 O 2 . In this case, 1 O 2 and O 2•− act as the indispensable intermediate species to accelerate the circulation of O 2 (as high as 14.3 mg/L) in the micro area around Vo, and promote this nanoconfinement electron-recycling process with 67% improvement of Bisphenol A degradation. This study provides a brand-new perspective for the nonradical mechanism of PMS activation over Vo-containing metallic compounds in natural environments.

Bed load transport is a highly complex process. The probability density function (PDF) of particle velocities results from the local particle momentum variability in response to fluid drag and interactions with the bed. Starting from the forces exerted on a single particle under low transport rates (i.e., rolling and sliding regimes), we derive here the nonlinear stochastic Langevin equation (LE) to describe the dynamics of a single particle, accounting for both the deterministic and the stochastic components of such forces. Then, the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE), which describes the evolution of the PDF of the ensemble particle velocities, is derived from the LE. We show that the theoretical PDFs of both streamwise and cross-stream velocities obtained by solving the FPE under equilibrium conditions have exponential form (PDFs of both positive and negative velocities decay exponentially), consistent with the experimental data by Roseberry et al. (2012). Moreover, we theoretically show how the exponential-like PDF of an ensemble of particle velocities results from the forces exerted on a single particle. We also show that the simulated particle motions using the proposed Langevin model exhibit an emergent nonlinear relationship between hop distances and travel times (power law with exponent 5/3), in agreement with the experimental data, providing a statistical description of the particles' random motion in the context of a stochastic transport process. Finally, our study emphasizes that the motion of individual particles, described by the LE, and the behavior of the ensemble, described by the FPE, are connected within a statistical mechanics framework.

In this study, a soil culture experiment was set up in barrels to investigate the effect of waterlogging duration at different growth stages on the growth, yield, and quality of cotton in the Huang-Huai Region of China during summer. The experiment was conducted at four growth stages of cotton (seedling, squaring, flowering, and boll opening), and the waterlogging duration at each stage was set to five levels (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 d) and the waterlogging depth was 5cm. Twenty different treatment combinations were established, and one group without waterlogging throughout the whole growth period was used as the control (CK). The results showed that the waterlogging treatments at the different growth stages reduced the morphological and yield parameters of the cotton plants as well as the physiological parameters of the cotton leaves, and the extent of the reduction in these parameters increased with the extension of the waterlogging duration. The effect of waterlogging at different growth stages on the cotton decreased in the order of the flowering, squaring, seedling, and boll-opening stages, and the highest yield reduction rates for the four stages were 38.8%, 27.9%, 18.3%, and 7.6% respectively. Additionally, waterlogging decreased the quality parameters of cotton such as the upper-half mean length, uniformity index, micronaire value, elongation, yellowness, and lint percentage at the squaring, flowering, and boll-opening stages. Furthermore, at the seedling stage waterlogging for no more than 6 d allowed the morphological and yield parameters to recover in the boll-opening stage upon timely drainage, and these parameters showed no significant decreases compared with the CK level. The critical duration of waterlogging at the squaring stage was 4 d. However, at the flowering stage, even 2 d of waterlogging could lead to the stagnation of morphological development and prevent the recovery of the cotton yield to the CK level. Therefore, when waterlogging disasters occur in cotton fields, the implementation of appropriate surface and subsurface drainage schemes for the different growth stages is needed as soon as possible to mitigate the damage.
