O artigo investiga a variação de /r/ em onset silábico ([r]ápido::[h]ápido::[ɾ]ápido; ca[r]o::ca[h]o::ca[ɾ]o) no português de contato com o talian em Planalto, interior de Concórdia (SC). Assumindo a perspectiva sociolinguística variacionista laboviana (LABOV, 2008 [1972]) da variação linguística como prática social (ECKERT, 2000) e dos significados sociais das variantes linguísticas (IRVINE, 2001; ECKERT, 2003, 2016; GAL, 2016), fez-se pesquisa etnográfica, análise de produção, análise de percepção e avaliação linguística. Na pesquisa etnográfica, observou-se o uso de tepe alveolar [ɾ] mais frequentemente na fala de homens e idosos, e da variante fricativa (glotal [h, ɦ] ou velar [x, ɣ]), nas práticas sociais de mulheres e de jovens. Na análise de produção, nos 1.334 contextos de /r/ levantados de 24 entrevistas sociolinguísticas, foi de 78,8% a proporção de tepe, 12% de fricativa e 9,2% de vibrante alveolar [r]. A vibrante é favorecida pelos falantes de meia-idade e idosos, e por sílabas mediais; o tepe, pelo gênero masculino. Vibrante e tepe são desfavorecidos pelos jovens; a fricativa é favorecida por jovens e por mulheres com maior mobilidade geográfica. Na análise de percepção e avaliação linguística, o tepe é menos prestigiado e mais rural; a fricativa, mais urbana e mais prestigiada.
Neste estudo, o status fonológico da vibrante é discutido com base nas teorias estruturalista, gerativista e sociolinguística. A maioria dos estruturalistas confirma a existência de dois fonemas, a vibrante forte e a fraca; já os gerativistas defendem a existência de um só fonema vibrante. Para Câmara Jr. (1953) e Abaurre e Sandalo (2003) é a vibrante forte, para Lopez (1979) e Monaretto (1997) é a vibrante fraca. Muitos ítalo-brasileiros interpretam o tepe [ɾ] e a múltipla [ř] como sendo parte da mesma unidade fonológica (MONARETTO, 1997). Pressupõem-se a existência da vibrante múltipla [ř] na estrutura subjacente do português brasileiro, pois permite derivar todas as formas variantes de maneira simples, natural e com poder de previsão (ABAURRE; SANDALO, 2003).
