A study was undertaken to identify and prioritise the water bodies which are likely to affect the railway line during flash floods. A part of Warangal district, Andhra Pradesh, India, was chosen as the test site.An integrated approach using remote sensing techniques and Geographic Information Systems was adopted. The remote sensing data, in conjunction with Survey of India toposheet information and ground truth data, was used to prepare thematic maps of Landuse/Landcover, drainage density and water bodies. The ERDAS PC based GIS software, version 7.5, was used to digitise, edit, display and analyse the thematic maps. The technique was found useful in identifying the water bodies for which control measures should be implemented.
