The objectives of hydro metallurgy are to extract metals; to purify and concentrate metal bearing solutions; to recover metals; and to render waste streams acceptable for disposal to repositories and the environment. These aspects are discussed by way of examples of plants and processes which have beerl used or developed recently. Cobalt, copper, gold, lead, nickel, silver, uranium and zinc hydrometallurgical applications are discussed. Because of the proliferation of published results and construction of hydrometallurgical facilities, the subject is treated in a cursory manner. The list of references, although extensive, is by no means exhaustive.
