Innovations play an important role in achieving competitiveness and long-term economic growth at all levels of the economic hierarchy. More recently, the role of sustainability-oriented innovation in achieving economic growth has become equally important. However, there is a scientific debate about the possibility of effective commercialization of sustainability-oriented innovations. The existence of such scientific debate, as well as the absence of citation-based systematic literature reviews, became a prerequisite for conducting a comparative literature review of research on the effective commercialization of conventional and sustainability-oriented innovations. The purpose of the study is to conduct a comparative review and analysis of research on the commercialization efficiency of conventional and sustainability-oriented innovations. The analysis was conducted on the basis of a citation-based systematic literature review method. The results show that sustainable innovation research is more focused on the relationship between commercialization and firm performance. In the field of conventional innovations, research trends have shifted from studying the impact of technology transfer office (TTO) size, staffing, compensation practices to how strategic factors affect the efficiency of commercialization. In the area of sustainability-oriented innovation, the issues of the strategic orientation impact cause the most sustained interest, while managerial concerns and the stringency of environmental regulations have been actively explored in the past few years. It was revealed that the commercialization efficiency of sustainability-oriented innovations is characterized by so called sustainability-oriented criteria. A distinctive output criterion for commercialization efficiency of sustainability-oriented innovation is the improvement of the firm’s image. In addition, content analysis identified possible research directions to be investigated.
The circular economy concept is becoming more important worldwide, promoting the closed-loop production cycle paradigm as opposed to the linear economic model. For emerging markets, the concept of CE is equally important. However, emerging economies have specific contextual conditions, which might hinder the CE’s successful implementation. Preliminary research showed the lack of comprehensive reviews on CE in emerging markets context, which became a prerequisite for conducting a systematic literature review. The purpose of the study is to distinguish research streams, concepts, and topics in the field of CE in emerging markets from a longitudinal perspective as well as to define features and conditions of CE implementation in emerging markets. The analysis was conducted using the Biblioshiny R-package tool. The results show that barriers and drivers to CE implementation in emerging markets are the most studied research areas. The most common drivers of CE development in emerging markets are attitude, social pressure, environmental commitment, consumer behavior, and institutional pressures. Low awareness and lack of environmental education are the most widespread impediments that lead to insufficient development of particular disposal. In addition, lack of regulatory incentives and insufficient infrastructure are also common barriers that limit CE development in emerging economies. The influence of Industry 4.0 technologies on CE implementation, circular business model,s and waste management are of increasing scientific interest. Moreover, features and conditions of CE implementation in emerging markets were derived. In addition, the content analysis identified possible research directions to be investigated.
Evaluating the effectiveness of research activities is one of the topical issues in the higher education system. Despite this, studies on the extensive assessment of research units' outputs at the university are rare. The main goals of this study are (1) the development of a comprehensive methodology for assessing the research performance of the units; (2) testing this methodology to compare the performance indicators of 37 research institutes and centers. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were applied in this study. Research results can be beneficiary for government bodies, allowing them to make decisions about the allocation or reallocation of funding and top management in higher education for benchmarking and internal performance evaluation of research institutes and centers. This article contributes to the theoretical basis of research performance evaluation at HEIs and puts forward a step-by-step methodology.
