Point design targets have been specified for the initial ignition campaign on the National Ignition Facility [G. H. Miller, E. I. Moses, and C. R. Wuest, Opt. Eng. 443, 2841 (2004)]. The targets contain D-T fusion fuel in an ablator of either CH with Ge doping, or Be with Cu. These shells are imploded in a U or Au hohlraum with a peak radiation temperature set between 270 and 300 eV. Considerations determining the point design include laser-plasma interactions, hydrodynamic instabilities, laser operations, and target fabrication. Simulations were used to evaluate choices, and to define requirements and specifications. Simulation techniques and their experimental validation are summarized. Simulations were used to estimate the sensitivity of target performance to uncertainties and variations in experimental conditions. A formalism is described that evaluates margin for ignition, summarized in a parameter the Ignition Threshold Factor (ITF). Uncertainty and shot-to-shot variability in ITF are evaluated, and sensitivity of the margin to characteristics of the experiment. The formalism is used to estimate probability of ignition. The ignition experiment will be preceded with an experimental campaign that determines features of the design that cannot be defined with simulations alone. The requirements for this campaign are summarized. Requirements are summarized for the laser and target fabrication.
Several targets are described that in simulations give yields of 1–30 MJ when indirectly driven by 0.9–2 MJ of 0.35 μm laser light. The article describes the targets, the modeling that was used to design them, and the modeling done to set specifications for the laser system in the proposed National Ignition Facility. Capsules with beryllium or polystyrene ablators are enclosed in gold hohlraums. All the designs utilize a cryogenic fuel layer; it is very difficult to achieve ignition at this scale with a noncryogenic capsule. It is necessary to use multiple bands of illumination in the hohlraum to achieve sufficiently uniform x-ray irradiation, and to use a low-Z gas fill in the hohlraum to reduce filling of the hohlraum with gold plasma. Critical issues are hohlraum design and optimization, Rayleigh–Taylor instability modeling, and laser–plasma interactions.
Ignition requires precisely controlled, high convergence implosions to assemble a dense shell of deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel with ρR>∼1 g/cm2 surrounding a 10 keV hot spot with ρR ∼ 0.3 g/cm2. A working definition of ignition has been a yield of ∼1 MJ. At this yield the α-particle energy deposited in the fuel would have been ∼200 kJ, which is already ∼10 × more than the kinetic energy of a typical implosion. The National Ignition Campaign includes low yield implosions with dudded fuel layers to study and optimize the hydrodynamic assembly of the fuel in a diagnostics rich environment. The fuel is a mixture of tritium-hydrogen-deuterium (THD) with a density equivalent to DT. The fraction of D can be adjusted to control the neutron yield. Yields of ∼1014−15 14 MeV (primary) neutrons are adequate to diagnose the hot spot as well as the dense fuel properties via down scattering of the primary neutrons. X-ray imaging diagnostics can function in this low yield environment providing additional information about the assembled fuel either by imaging the photons emitted by the hot central plasma, or by active probing of the dense shell by a separate high energy short pulse flash. The planned use of these targets and diagnostics to assess and optimize the assembly of the fuel and how this relates to the predicted performance of DT targets is described. It is found that a good predictor of DT target performance is the THD measurable parameter, Experimental Ignition Threshold Factor, ITFX ∼ Y × dsf 2.3, where Y is the measured neutron yield between 13 and 15 MeV, and dsf is the down scattered neutron fraction defined as the ratio of neutrons between 10 and 12 MeV and those between 13 and 15 MeV.
Capsules with beryllium ablators have long been considered as alternatives to plastic for the National Ignition Facility laser ; now the superior performance of beryllium is becoming well substantiated . Beryllium capsules have the advantages of relative insensitivity to instability growth, low opacity, high tensile strength, and high thermal Zimmerman and W. L. h e r , Comments Plasmas Phys. Controlled Thermonucl. Fusion, 2 , 5 1 (2975)l results that particular beryllium capsule designs are several times less sensitive than the CH point design to instability growth from DT ice roughness. These capsule designs contain more ablator mass and leave some beryllium unablated at ignition. By adjusting the level of copper dopant, the unablated mass can increase or decrease, with a corresponding decrease or increase in sensitivity to perturbations . A plastic capsule with the same ablator mass as the beryllium and leaving the same unablated mass also shows this reduced perturbation sensitivity. Beryllium's low opacity permits the creation of 250 eV capsule designs. Its high tensile strength allows it to contain DT fuel at room temperature. Its high thermal conductivity simplifies cryogenic fielding.
Recent results are presented from two-dimensional LASNEX [G. B. Zimmerman and W. L. Kruer, Comments Plasmas Phys. Controlled Thermonucl. Fusion 2, 51 (1975)] calculations of the indirectly driven hohlraum and ignition capsules proposed for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The calculations concentrate on two capsule designs, the baseline design that has a bromine-doped plastic ablator, and the beryllium design that has a copper-doped beryllium ablator. Both capsules have a cryogenic fuel layer. Primary emphasis in these calculations is placed upon robustness studies detailing various sensitivities. Because of computer modeling limitations these studies fall into two categories: those performed with integrated modeling where the capsule, hohlraum, and laser rays all are modeled simultaneously with the laser power levels as the only energy input; and those performed in a capsule-only mode where an externally imposed radiative flux is applied to the exterior of the capsule, and only the capsule performance is modeled. Integrated modeling calculations address sensitivities to, e.g., the laser pointing; among other things, capsule-only calculations address yield degradation due to the growth of hydrodynamic instabilities seeded by initial surface roughnesses on the capsules. Limitations of the calculational models and directions for future research are discussed. The results of the robustness studies performed to date enhance the authors’ confidence that the NIF can achieve ignition and produce 10–15 MJ of capsule yield with one or more capsule designs.
The National Ignition Facility (NIF) i,ii at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is a 192 beam, 1.8 MJ 0.35 µm laser designed to drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) capsules to ignition iii. NIF was formally dedicated in May 2009. The National Ignition Campaign, a collaborative research undertaking by LLNL, LLE, LANL, GA, and SNL, has a goal of achieving a robust burning plasma by the end of 2012. In the indirect-drive approach iv , the laser energy is converted to thermal x-rays inside a high Z cavity (hohlraum). The x rays then ablate the outer layers of a DT-filled capsule placed at the center of the hohlraum, causing the capsule to implode, compress and heat the DT and ignite.
Several inertial confinement fusion (ICF) capsule designs have been proposed as possible candidates for achieving ignition by indirect drive on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser [Paisner et al., Laser Focus World 30, 75 (1994)]. This article reviews these designs, their predicted performance using one-, two-, and three-dimensional numerical simulations, and their fabricability. Recent design work at a peak x-ray drive temperature of 250 eV with either 900 or 1300 kJ total laser energy confirms earlier capsule performance estimates [Lindl, Phys. Plasmas 2, 3933 (1995)] that were based on hydrodynamic stability arguments. These simulations at 250 eV and others at the nominal 300 eV drive show that capsules having either copper doped beryllium (Be+Cu) or polyimide (C22H10N2O4) ablators have favorable implosion stability and material fabrication properties. Prototypes of capsules using these ablator materials are being constructed using several techniques: brazing together machined hemishells (Be+Cu), sputter deposition (Be+Cu), and monomer deposition followed by thermal processing (polyimide).
The National Ignition Campaign (NIC) uses non-igniting "THD" capsules to study and optimize the hydrodynamic assembly of the fuel without burn. These capsules are designed to simultaneously reduce DT neutron yield and to maintain hydrodynamic similarity with the DT ignition capsule.We will discuss nominal THD performance and the associated experimental observables. We will show the results of large ensembles of numerical simulations of THD and DT implosions and their simulated diagnostic outputs. These simulations cover a broad range of both nominal and offnominal implosions. We will focus on the development of an experimental implosion performance metric called the experimental ignition threshold factor (ITFX). We will discuss the relationship between ITFX and other integrated performance metrics, including the ignition threshold factor (ITF), the generalized Lawson criterion (GLC), and the hot spot pressure (HSP). We will then consider the experimental results of the recent NIC THD campaign. We will show that we can observe the key quantities for producing a measured ITFX and for inferring the other performance metrics. We will discuss trends in the experimental data, improvement in ITFX, and briefly the upcoming tuning campaign aimed at taking the next steps in performance improvement on the path to ignition on NIF. * Electronic address: spears9@llnl.gov
