Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) is an approach to fusion that relies on the inertia of the fuel mass to provide confinement. To achieve conditions under which inertial confinement is sufficient for efficient thermonuclear burn, a capsule (generally a spherical shell) containing thermonuclear fuel is compressed in an implosion process to conditions of high density and temperature. ICF capsules rely on either electron conduction (direct drive) or x rays (indirect drive) for energy transport to drive an implosion. In direct drive, the laser beams (or charged particle beams) are aimed directly at a target. The laser energy is transferred to electrons by means of inverse bremsstrahlung or a variety of plasma collective processes. In indirect drive, the driver energy (from laser beams or ion beams) is first absorbed in a high-Z enclosure (a hohlraum), which surrounds the capsule. The material heated by the driver emits x rays, which drive the capsule implosion. For optimally designed targets, 70%–80% of the driver energy can be converted to x rays. The optimal hohlraum geometry depends on the driver. Because of relaxed requirements on laser beam uniformity, and reduced sensitivity to hydrodynamic instabilities, the U.S. ICF Program has concentrated most of its effort since 1976 on the x-ray or indirect-drive approach to ICF. As a result of years of experiments and modeling, we are building an increasingly strong case for achieving ignition by indirect drive on the proposed National Ignition Facility (NIF). The ignition target requirements for hohlraum energetics, radiation symmetry, hydrodynamic instabilities and mix, laser plasma interaction, pulse shaping, and ignition requirements are all consistent with experiments. The NIF laser design, at 1.8 MJ and 500 TW, has the margin to cover uncertainties in the baseline ignition targets. In addition, data from the NIF will provide a solid database for ion-beam-driven hohlraums being considered for future energy applications. In this paper we analyze the requirements for indirect drive ICF and review the theoretical and experimental basis for these requirements. Although significant parts of the discussion apply to both direct and indirect drive, the principal focus is on indirect drive.
The 1990 National Academy of Science final report of its review of the Inertial Confinement Fusion Program recommended completion of a series of target physics objectives on the 10-beam Nova laser at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as the highest-priority prerequisite for proceeding with construction of an ignition-scale laser facility, now called the National Ignition Facility ͑NIF͒. These objectives were chosen to demonstrate that there was sufficient understanding of the physics of ignition targets that the laser requirements for laboratory ignition could be accurately specified. This research on Nova, as well as additional research on the Omega laser at the University of Rochester, is the subject of this review. The objectives of the U.S. indirect-drive target physics program have been to experimentally demonstrate and predictively model hohlraum characteristics, as well as capsule performance in targets that have been scaled in key physics variables from NIF targets. To address the hohlraum and hydrodynamic constraints on indirect-drive ignition, the target physics program was divided into the Hohlraum and Laser-Plasma Physics ͑HLP͒ program and the Hydrodynamically Equivalent Physics ͑HEP͒ program. The HLP program addresses laser-plasma coupling, x-ray generation and transport, and the development of energy-efficient hohlraums that provide the appropriate spectral, temporal, and spatial x-ray drive. The HEP experiments address the issues of hydrodynamic instability and mix, as well as the effects of flux asymmetry on capsules that are scaled as closely as possible to ignition capsules ͑hydrodynamic equivalence͒. The HEP program also addresses other capsule physics issues associated with ignition, such as energy gain and energy loss to the fuel during implosion in the absence of alpha-particle deposition. The results from the Nova and Omega experiments approach the NIF requirements for most of the important ignition capsule parameters, including drive temperature, drive symmetry, and hydrodynamic instability. This paper starts with a review of the NIF target designs that have formed the motivation for the goals of the target physics program. Following that are theoretical and experimental results from Nova and Omega relevant to the requirements of those targets. Some elements of this work were covered in a 1995 review of indirect-drive ͓J. D. Lindl, ''Development of the indirect-drive approach to inertial confinement fusion and the target physics basis for ignition and gain,'' Phys. Plasmas 2, 3933 ͑1995͔͒. In order to present as complete a picture as possible of the research that has been carried out on indirect drive, key elements of that earlier review are also covered here, along with a review of work carried out since 1995.
Point design targets have been specified for the initial ignition campaign on the National Ignition Facility [G. H. Miller, E. I. Moses, and C. R. Wuest, Opt. Eng. 443, 2841 (2004)]. The targets contain D-T fusion fuel in an ablator of either CH with Ge doping, or Be with Cu. These shells are imploded in a U or Au hohlraum with a peak radiation temperature set between 270 and 300 eV. Considerations determining the point design include laser-plasma interactions, hydrodynamic instabilities, laser operations, and target fabrication. Simulations were used to evaluate choices, and to define requirements and specifications. Simulation techniques and their experimental validation are summarized. Simulations were used to estimate the sensitivity of target performance to uncertainties and variations in experimental conditions. A formalism is described that evaluates margin for ignition, summarized in a parameter the Ignition Threshold Factor (ITF). Uncertainty and shot-to-shot variability in ITF are evaluated, and sensitivity of the margin to characteristics of the experiment. The formalism is used to estimate probability of ignition. The ignition experiment will be preceded with an experimental campaign that determines features of the design that cannot be defined with simulations alone. The requirements for this campaign are summarized. Requirements are summarized for the laser and target fabrication.
Indirect-drive hohlraum experiments at the National Ignition Facility have demonstrated symmetric capsule implosions at unprecedented laser drive energies of 0.7 MJ. 192 simultaneously fired laser beams heat ignition emulate hohlraums to radiation temperatures of 3.3 million Kelvin compressing 1.8-millimeter capsules by the soft x rays produced by the hohlraum. Self-generated plasma-optics gratings on either end of the hohlraum tune the laser power distribution in the hohlraum producing symmetric x-ray drive as inferred from the shape of the capsule self-emission. These experiments indicate conditions suitable for compressing deuterium-tritium filled capsules with the goal to achieve burning fusion plasmas and energy gain in the laboratory.With completion (1) and commissioning (2) of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) the quest for producing a burning fusion plasma has begun (3, 4). The goal of these experiments is to compress matter to densities and temperatures higher than the interior of the sun (5-7) which will initiate nuclear fusion and burn of hydrogen isotopes (8-10). This technique holds promise to demonstrate a highly efficient carbon-free process that will burn milligram quantities of nuclear fuel on each laser shot for producing energy gain in the laboratory.The NIF (11) consists of 192 laser beams that have been arranged into cones of beams to irradiate a target from the top and bottom hemispheres. This "indirect-drive" laser geometry has been chosen for the first experiments to heat the interior of centimeter-scale cylindrical gold hohlraums (8,(12)(13)(14)(15) through laser entrance holes (LEH) on the top and bottom end of the cylinder (Fig. 1). Hohlraums act as radiation enclosures that convert the optical laser light into soft x-rays that are characterized by the radiation temperature T RAD . Present ignition designs operate at temperatures of 270 to 305 eV or 3.1 to 3.5 million K. The radiation field compresses a spherical fusion capsule mounted in the center of the hohlraum by x-ray ablation of the outer shell. The ablation process compresses the cryogenically prepared solid deuterium-tritium fuel layer in a spherical rocket implosion. In the final stages, the fuel reaches densities 1000-times solid and the central hot spot temperatures will approach 100 million K to initiate the nuclear burn process.We have symmetrically imploded 1.8-mm diameter fusion capsules in cryogenically fielded centimeter-scale hohlraums at 20 K. These experiments show efficient hohlraum heating to radiation temperatures of 3.3 million K. In addition, the large scale-length plasmas encountered in these experiments have allowed us to use self-generated plasma optics gratings (16) to control the radiation symmetry (17) and to achieve symmetric fusion capsule implosions.Figure 2 A shows the laser power at the frequency-tripled wavelength of 351 nm versus time for two different pulse shapes. For the past four decades, scientists throughout the world have pursued the dream of controlled thermonuclear fusion. The attraction of this goal is the enormous energy that is potentially available in fusion fuels and the view of fusion as a safe, clean energy source. The fusion reaction with the highest cross section uses the deuterium and tritium isotopes of hydrogen, and D-T would be the fuel of choice for the first generation of fusion reactors. (See the article by J. Geoffrey Cordey, Robert J. Goldston and Ronald R. Parker, January, page 22.) Development of an economically viable fusion reactor would literally give us the energy equivalent of oceans of oil. Because seawater contains about 40 g of deuterium and 0.1 g of lithium per tonne, every barrel of seawater contains the energy equivalent of almost 30 barrels of oil in deuterium fuel and about one-fifth of a barrel of oil in D-T fuel (where tritium is obtained from neutron reactions on lithium). A volume of seawater equal to the top meter of the Earth's oceans would yield enough fuel to supply D-T fusion reactors for thousands of years of electricity production at today's rate of usage. The two primary approaches to developing fusion are magnetic confinement fusion, reviewed in the January issue of PHYSICS TODAY, and inertial confinement fusion, 1 reviewed in this article and the article by William J. Hogan, Roger Bangerter and Gerald L. Kulcinski on page 42. Significant elements of the work presented here were carried out under classified Department of Energy programs and have been only recently declassified. Several targets are described that in simulations give yields of 1–30 MJ when indirectly driven by 0.9–2 MJ of 0.35 μm laser light. The article describes the targets, the modeling that was used to design them, and the modeling done to set specifications for the laser system in the proposed National Ignition Facility. Capsules with beryllium or polystyrene ablators are enclosed in gold hohlraums. All the designs utilize a cryogenic fuel layer; it is very difficult to achieve ignition at this scale with a noncryogenic capsule. It is necessary to use multiple bands of illumination in the hohlraum to achieve sufficiently uniform x-ray irradiation, and to use a low-Z gas fill in the hohlraum to reduce filling of the hohlraum with gold plasma. Critical issues are hohlraum design and optimization, Rayleigh–Taylor instability modeling, and laser–plasma interactions.
Radiative hydrodynamics simulations of ignition experiments show that energy transfer between crossing laser beams allows tuning of the implosion symmetry. A new full-scale, three-dimensional quantitative model has been developed for crossed-beam energy transfer, allowing calculations of the propagation and coupling of multiple laser beams and their associated plasma waves in ignition hohlraums. This model has been implemented in a radiative-hydrodynamics code, demonstrating control of the implosion symmetry by a wavelength separation between cones of laser beams.
