Calculation of total intrauterine volume (TIUV) has become a n important part of obstetric sonography in the evaluation of possible intrauterine growth retardation. However, a number of problems with the measurements and the calculation itself limit the reliability of this determination. More reliable measurements may be obtained through rigid standardization of technique. However, a certain amount of inaccuracy is inherent in the procedure and cannot be corrected.
