En 1890, Maurice Denis appelait de ses vœux une décoration du livre « sans servitude du texte » consistant en « une broderie d’arabesques sur les pages, un accompagnement de lignes expressives ». L’ornementation linéaire qui investit le livre à la fin du siècle semble mettre en œuvre ce programme. Le livre devient alors un lieu où s’expérimentent de nouveaux nouages entre les arts et où s’inventent de nouveaux rapports entre lisible et visible. De l’amour de loin mis en abyme par l’ornementation de Mucha pour Ilsée, princesse de Tripoli à l’union libre du vers libre et de l’arabesque dans les éditions Deman en passant par le corps à corps de la reliure nancéienne, l’Art nouveau nous incite à filer la métaphore de l’hymen des arts effectué en mineur dans le livre considéré lui-même comme objet d’art.
Si tant d'écrivains fin-de-siècle se sont adonnés à l'écriture du conte c'est certainement, comme le remarque Gérard Peylet, « parce qu'il était plus artificiel, parce qu'il permettait de faire quelque chose de joli, de limité, comme un bibelot, parce qu'il exigeait une forme très soignée, très étudiée 1 ». Le conte serait la forme littéraire privilégiée d'écrivains esthètes, adaptée aux ciselures de l'écriture artiste. La comparaison suggérée par Gérard Peylet entre condensation du conte et minutie du bibelot confirme l'hypothèse de Bernard Vouilloux qui envisage, à partir du style des Goncourt, un « devenir-bibelot 2 » de la prose artiste. Le bibelot, parce qu'il concentre « le maximum de valeur dans le minimum de place 3 », entre en résonance avec des formes littéraires, conte ou poème, dont l'effet procède d'une poétique de la concentration et de la condensation. Dominique Pety, à la suite de Bernard Vouilloux, a tenté de définir une poétique de la collection qui traiterait les mots comme autant de bibelots verbaux. L'art décoratif, explique-t-elle, « est ainsi le lieu où s'origine en partie la poésie du second dix-neuvième siècle, et le modèle qu'elle s'est donnée pour formuler sa littérarité 4 ». L'écriture (du) bibelot est incontestablement l'occasion du déploiement de cette « théâtralité du style 5 » caractéristique de l'esthétique des recueils de contes symbolistes selon Bertrand Vibert. Elle est en somme un exercice idéal pour qui souhaite faire oeuvre de poète, même en prose. 2 C'est que le bibelot, en cette fin du XIX e siècle, se voit doté d'un « pouvoir de suggestion comparable, dans certains cas, à celui d'un poème 6 ». Sa matérialité se spiritualise, s'enrichit des correspondances multiples qu'il suscite dans l'imaginaire de celui qui le contemple et le manipule. Dans la dernière décennie du siècle, le renouveau des arts décoratifs accroît considérablement le prestige de ces objets auprès des écrivains.
