Wire and arc additive manufacturing based on cold metal transfer (WAAM-CMT) has aroused wide public concern in recent years as one of the most advanced technologies for manufacturing components with complex geometries. However, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the parts fabricated by WAAM-CMT technology mostly are intolerable for engineering application and should be improved necessarily. In this study, heat treatment was proposed to optimize the microstructure and enhance mechanical properties in the case of AlSi7Mg0.6 alloy. After heat treatment, the division between coarse grain zone and fine grain zone of as-deposited samples seemed to disappear and the distribution of Si and Mg elements was more uniform. What is more, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were improved significantly, while the ductility could be sustained after heat treatment. The improvement of strength is attributed to precipitation strengthening, and the shape change of Si phase. No reduction in ductility is due to the higher work hardening rate caused by nanostructured precipitate. It is proved that heat treatment as an effective method can control the microstructure and enhance comprehensive mechanical properties, which will boost rapid development of WAAM industrial technology.
In recent years, the motor has been increasingly used to replace the conventional gasoline engine for carbon emission reduction, and the high-performance motor is urgently required. The stator and rotor in a motor are made of hundreds of joined and laminated electrical steels. This paper covers the current research in joining the laminated electrical steels for the motor application, together with the critical assessment of our understanding. It includes the representative joining method, modeling of the joining process, microstructure of the weld zone, mechanical strength and magnetic properties. The gaps in the scientific understanding, and the research needs for the expansion of joining laminated electrical steels, are provided.
In this study, the dependence of Er addition (0-0.49 wt %) on the microstructural evolution and related tensile strength at high temperature (HT) were investigated for the eutectic Al-Si piston alloys. The results showed there were intermetallic compounds of -Al3CuNi, -Al7Cu4Ni, Al4Cu2Mg8Si7, β-AlFeSi and Al3(Er, Cu, Fe) (Ni, Si) 2 identified at T5 states. Herein, the added Er element has led to the formation of the star-like and the irregular-shaped Al3(Er, Cu, Fe) (Ni, Si) 2 phase. The phase was stable which showed little change in both size and composition experienced solid solution at HT during the T6 treatment. For the HT strengths (350 oC), the T5 state alloys have higher UTSs than those at T6 state, both of which were reduced gradually with the increasing Er contents. The variation of HT strengths caused by the Er addition was explained by the microstructral evolution, namely Al3(Er, Cu, Fe) (Ni, Si)2 phase formation
Abstract:The structural, electronic and elastic properties of B2 structure Hafnium compounds were investigated by means of first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and local density approximation (LDA) methods. Both GGA and LDA methods can make acceptable optimized lattice parameters in comparison with experimental parameters. Therefore, both GGA and LDA methods are used to predict the electronic and elastic properties of B2 HfX (X = Os, Ir and Pt) compounds. Initially, the calculated formation enthalpies have confirmed the order of thermodynamic stability as HfPt > HfIr > HfOs. Secondly, the electronic structures are analyzed to explain the bonding characters and stabilities in these compounds. Furthermore, the calculated elastic properties and elastic anisotropic behaviors are ordered and analyzed in these compounds. The calculated bulk moduli are in the reduced order of HfOs > HfIr > HfPt, which has exhibited the linear relationship with electron densities. Finally, the anisotropy of acoustic velocities, Debye temperatures and thermal conductivities are obtained and discussed.
