Two nanosensors for simultaneous optical measurements of the bioanalytically and biologically relevant analytes temperature ("T"), oxygen ("O"), and pH ("P") have been designed. These "TOP" nanosensors are based on 100 nmsized silica-coated polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) doped with a near-infrared emissive oxygen-and temperature-sensitive chromium(III) complex ([Cr(ddpd) 2 ]-[BPh 4 ] 3 , CrBPh 4 ) and an inert reference dye (Nile Red, NR or 5,10,15,20tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl) porphyrin, TFPP) and are covalently labeled with pHsensitive fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC). These emitters can be excited at the same wavelength and reveal spectrally distinguishable emission bands, allowing for ratiometric intensity-based and time-resolved studies in the visible and near-infrared wavelength region. Studies in PBS buffer solutions and in a model body liquid demonstrate the applicability of these nanosensors for the sensitive luminescence readout of TOP simultaneously at the same spatialposition.

Motor vehicles are the major source of urban air pollution. The abatement of air pollutant emissions is an urgent task for environmental protection. This paper simulated the abatement for carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), and particular matter (PM) emissions from vehicles under four scenarios in the year 2015 in Hangzhou, China. It was found that the emissions of CO, VOCs, NO x , and PM from vehicles were 440.551, 23.079, 44.255, and 6.532 kt/a in 2010 in Hangzhou, respectively. The vehicle population will increase to over 1.2 million with a 60.7% growth rate until 2015 (estimated). Based on the scenario analysis, it was found that eliminating substandard vehicles and upgrading vehicle's standards could help reduce CO and VOCs effectively, while the expected abatement of NO x and PM would be offset by the rapid increase in the vehicle numbers. It was also found that integrated measurements, including eliminating substandard vehicles, upgrading vehicle standards, supplying low sulfur oil, and introducing alternative fuel vehicles could simultaneously reduce the four key pollutants. These integrated policies make it possible to reduce 250.197, 10.270, 1.791, and 0.335 kt/a CO, VOCs, NO x , and PM with 56.79%, 44.50%, 4.05%, and 5.14% decrease rates in 2015, respectively, when compared to those in 2010.

A novel label-free DNAzyme molecular beacon (MBzyme) strategy was for the first time developed for colorimetric amplification detection of target nucleic acids. The MBzyme, which is designed to contain peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme that is locked by a common hairpin, was engineered to form a catalytically active MBzyme through hybridizing with the target p53 DNA. The MBzyme is a multifunctional label-free probe that can act as the target recognition element, catalytic DNAzyme and the primer of polymerization. The target p53 DNA hybridization can induce the isothermal circular strand-displacement polymerization even without any chemical modification and other DNA sequences. This unique amplifying strategy leads to the generation of multiple numbers of active MBzyme molecules even if one hybridization event occurs, achieving a dynamic range of seven orders of magnitude and giving a detection limit down to 25 fM which is 3-5 orders of magnitude lower than those of related literature reports. These achievements might be helpful in the design of highly efficient enhancers for G-quadruplex-hemin DNAzymes to be applied on the fundamental research, biotechnology, and biomedical diagnosis.
