Compressive myelopathy caused by an epidural haematoma associated with fibrocartilage embolism was diagnosed in a 2.5-year-old Hanoverian gelding. The patient showed severe ataxia with no improvement following medical therapy and a poor prognosis after myelography. An epidural mass located dorsal to the intervertebral disc between C4 and C5 was compressing the spinal cord dorsally to approximately onethird of its normal height. The epidural tissue was characterised histologically as an organised thrombus, and its major components were fibrin and macrophages with intracytoplasmic brown, iron-rich granules. Positive Alcian blue stain confirmed the presence of cartilage within the thrombus.
SUMMARYThis article describes chronic bacterial endocarditis as the cause of aortic regurgitation in a 25-year-old Thoroughbred used for horseback riding. The horse presented signs of depression, exercise intolerance, and weight loss. A pandiastolic murmur was identified, but no other clinical signs of bacterial endocarditis were identified. Haematological, serum biochemical, and urine analyses did not show any particular abnormalities. Electrocardiography showed a physiological dysrhythmia that was not pertinent to this case. Echocardiography revealed left ventricle (LV) dilatation and a nodule in the left coronary cusp of the aortic valve associated with regurgitation. Based on the prevalence of aortic valve pathology in geriatric horses, a noninfectious condition with a myxomatous noninflammatory infiltrate was suspected; therefore, no special treatment was prescribed due to the absence of heart failure. Several months later, the animal was euthanised after experiencing a femur fracture. At necropsy, the horse showed an eccentric left ventricle hypertrophy and 2 nodules in the left coronary cusp of the aortic valve. Histological examination revealed the presence of bacteria, which led to the diagnosis of chronic bacte...
Epitrichial gland carcinoma is a very rare type of skin tumour in horses. This report describes a horse presenting multiple nodules with associated normal, alopecic and ulcerated skin diagnosed via histopathology as epitrichial gland carcinoma. Treatment consisted of combined surgical excision, topical therapy for ulcerated nodules and cryotherapy for non-ulcerated tumours. Six months following therapy, the excised masses had not regrown and only 10 out of 25 small tumours previously treated with cryotherapy were noticeable.
This study was performed to evaluate the systemic short-term effects of tiludronate intravenous infusion on serum biochemical variables when administered as one single-dose in horses that undergo bone scintigraphy within 24 to 36 hours prior to treatment. Thirty-eight horses were enrolled in the study. Fifteen horses received a dose of technetium (0.3 mCi/kg), MDP (20 mg; medronate) and another fifteen horses received technetium (0.3 mCi/kg), MDP (20 mg), and furosemide (1 mg/kg). Then, 24 to 36 hours after the bone scintigraphy, eight horses were selected and received tiludronate (500 mg in 5L of 0.9% NaCl). Blood samples were collected 15 minutes prior, 24 and 48 hours after the treatment and a chemistry panel was assayed on the day of collection. Serum chemistry values were not significantly different between horses receiving tiludronate and those in both control groups. Additionally, one horse showed mild transient signs of colic recorded as pacing and stretching in the stall after 3 hours the injection of the tiludronic acid. The results suggest that tiludronate can be administered safely as one single dose in horses having undergone recent bone scintigraphy without additional complications or detrimental effect other than those previously described for the drug.
