La Insuficiencia Renal Aguda (IRA) es una patología que ha cobrado mayor importancia en la actualidad por sus crecientes tasas de morbimortalidad en todo el mundo. La IRA es un síndrome que se presenta por múltiples causas que provocan una injuria y se caracteriza por la disminución abrupta de la filtración glomerular, la cual resulta por la incapacidad del riñón para excretar los productos nitrogenados y para mantener la homeostasis de líquidos y electrolitos. Las técnicas de diagnóstico por imagen vienen experimentando en los últimos años un desarrollo lento pero sostenido que hace que se haya mejorado significativamente su capacidad para detectar patología a la vez que se intenta disminuir sus efectos adversos. El objetivo general de la presente revisión es compendiar los aspectos básicos del uso de la ecografía en la Insuficiencia Renal Aguda, con énfasis en su utilidad. La investigación se realizó bajo una metodología de tipo documental bibliográfica, bajo la modalidad de revisión. De los estudios revisados se desprende que la ecografía ha demostrado ser una herramienta útil en la evaluación inicial de la Insuficiencia Renal Aguda (IRA), con una gran cantidad de bondades entre las que destacan la carencia de toxicidad, la visualización de las estructuras anatómicas en tiempo real, un bajo costo, además de la disponibilidad de poder llevar los equipos hasta el lugar donde se encuentre el paciente, dada sus condiciones. Asimismo, es de fácil manejo con respecto a otros equipos para estudios de imagen y ofrece una gran cantidad de información capaz de orientar el diagnóstico, guiar terapéuticas y seguir la evolución de la patología. En virtud de todas estas ventajas, es la prueba más usada y útil para la detección y orientación rápida y eficaz de esta patología renal.
