La presente obra es el resultado del esfuerzo académico de un grupo de profesionales de la salud, quienes han recopilado la información disponible con la evidencia científica más actualizada sobre temas que esperamos ayuden a los profesionales de la salud y a médicos en formación interesados en profundizar sus conocimientos sobre patologías frecuentes que pueden presentarse dentro de su ámbito profesional.
En la actualidad, las alteraciones visuales constituyen un problema de salud importante a nivel mundial, con relevante repercusión para las personas, las familias y la sociedad. Uno de estos problemas incluye los daños sufridos por el nervio óptico, entre ellos, la Neuritis Óptica (NO). El término Neuritis Óptica se refiere a un proceso inflamatorio, generalmente idiopático que condiciona la desmielinización del nervio óptico. El deterioro de la visión en niños tiene un gran impacto personal. En consecuencia, la presente investigación tiene el propósito de compendiar algunas generalidades acerca de la Neuritis Óptica (NO) en pacientes pediátricos. La investigación se realizó bajo una metodología de tipo documental bibliográfica, bajo la modalidad de revisión. La Neuritis Óptica es rara en niños, no obstante, es una patología importante con grandes repercusiones en la vida de los pacientes y asociada a varias patologías, también importantes. Las más frecuentes en pacientes pediátricos es la bilateral y anterior (papilitis). Asimismo, estos pacientes presentan mejor pronóstico que los adultos. El diagnóstico es clínico, debe incluir pruebas de imágenes, analítica de sangre y líquido cefalorraquídeo. El tratamiento extrapolado de adultos consiste en el tratamiento con corticoesteroides intravenosos (metilprednisolona) o esteroides orales (prednisona). Otros tratamientos usados en enfermedades neuroinmunológicas son las inmunoglobulinas intravenosas (IgIV) y la plasmaféresis. Es importante el control de estos pacientes unos tres meses después del tratamiento. No se han establecido protocolos específicos referentes a un manejo óptimo de esta patología en la población pediátrica. La protocolización de la actividad frente a esta patología permite minimizar la variabilidad de las actuaciones de los profesionales de salud y facilita la toma de decisiones en cuanto al diagnóstico, seguimiento y tratamiento de la Neuropatía Óptica en pacientes pediátricos.
