As propostas educacionais que se orientam pela mediação dos processos de ensino e aprendizagem surgiram em oposição às teorias behavioristas da aprendizagem. A partir da análise de artigos da área de ensino de ciências sobre atividades didáticas, observou-se uma lacuna no que diz respeito à fundamentação teórica sobre mediação. Nesse contexto, o objetivo desse trabalho foi refletir sobre o conceito de mediação a partir da teoria histórico-cultural buscando uma definição que embase sua apropriada utilização no ensino de ciências. Defende-se o entendimento da mediação como uma ação complexa, que envolve interação social e mediação semiótica. Por fim, é proposto para o ensino de ciências um esquema de referência para uma ação mediada baseada em sequência de conteúdos.
Em 2021 o Programa de Pós-graduação em Educação em Ciências e Matemática do Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo completou 10 anos de existência. O objetivo desse artigo foi mapear a produção das dissertações da linha de ensino de ciências da natureza do programa nesse período. Foi realizada uma pesquisa documental que observou nas dissertações produzidas parâmetros como ano de defesa, gênero da/o pesquisador, metodologia, referenciais teóricos, ação da pesquisa, local de realização da pesquisa, nível escolar investigado, tipo de escola e modalidade de produto educacional produzido. A analise indicou, através das ações das pesquisas e produtos educacionais desenvolvidos, forte alinhamento aos pressupostos dos mestrados profissionais, bem como apontou para a utilização de abordagens para o ensino de ciências da natureza que privilegiam perspectivas mais reflexivas, como a perspectiva freireana, a Alfabetização Científica e a abordagem CTS/CTSA.
