Palavras-chave: Sociologia do improvável. Êxito escolar. Alunos de origem popular. ABSTRACTThis article discusses the sociological conditions of school success and the social rise of popular origin students. According to Bourdieu and Passeron, in the school competition the students who win are those who have received from their family, capitals (cultural and linguistic) and habitus. In other words, the children of the middle and upper classes (1964; 1970). So, we ask ourselves: what are the sociological conditions that allow the success of students of popular origin, wich are devoid of such capitals? To answer our question, in first place, we will examine Bourdieu's response; then, we will introduce Bergier e Xypas's research (2013) about a case of multirepeater students who have become physicians, engineers, lawyers etc., and we will discuss the concept of sociology of the unlikely. In third place, we will try the transposition into our theme of psychosociological theories created outside the school field. At last, we will question the existence of personal merit of the successful student; such merit is denied by the sociological tradition, but defended by the philosophical tradition. In order to untie these two opposing theories, we will present case studies, both with adults who, in spite of their popular origin, have become physicians, college professors, engineers, (from in-depth interviews), and with elementary school II pupils in a schoo...
