Caesalpinia echinata (Fabaceae) known as Pau Brasil is one of the species found in the Atlantic Forest and is used in folk medicine as an astringent, healing, odontoalgic and tonic. The present study aimed to perform the phytochemical screening through thin layer chromatography, in search of new sources of bioactive secondary metabolites and to investigate the ethanolic extract of the mixture of seeds and pods of the C. de echinata (EESVCe) for hemolytic activity (front the erythrocyte membrane) and toxicological (front the Artemia salina). The plant material was collected at the Federal University of Pernambuco and the molecules identified in the screening were: coumarins, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and terpenes. The evaluation of the hemolytic activity of the EESVCe
The species Caesalpinia echinata Lam (Caesalpinia echinata), popularly known as Pau Brasil , is a species belonging to the Fabaceae Family and is native to the Atlantic Forest. In popular medicine, the species is reported as astringent, healing, odontological, tonic, besides presenting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiangiogenic activities (AGUIAR & PINHO, 1996; GOMES et al., 2014; SILVA, 2001). With this in mind, the objective of this work was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the ethanolic extract obtained by mixing seeds and pods of Caesalpinia echinata (EESVCe) by the DPPH method. To perform this test, the samples were prepared by adding 1 mL of DPPH solution (60 µM, Sigma, Germany) in 2.5 mL of extract solution, which was diluted in ethanol at concentrations 50, 100 and 200 μg/mL. As a result it was verified that the increase of the antioxidant activity index was dose dependent in relation to the extract concentrations, suggesting that the extract has compounds with the capacity to stabilize free radicals. In summary, the results obtained in the present study demonstrated that the EESVCe is capable of inhibiting the oxidizing activity of DPPH. Thus demonstrating the intensity of the antioxidant action demonstrated by the plants.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
