A sociedade moderna vislumbrou a possibilidade da humanidade se libertar das amarras dos mitos e da religião, por meio do uso da razão. Sendo que na modernidade o humano seria senhor de si mesmo, passaria a ter o controle sobre si e sobre tudo o que o cercava. Esta crença impulsionou o desenvolvimento da ciência e consequentemente a aplicação da tecnologia sobre o meio ambiente não só apenas em sua dimensão natural, mas em sua dimensão social e econômica. Isto levou a humanidade a produzir uma nova condição social gerada pelo avanço tecnocientífico no processo econômico resultando no crescente e desenfreado uso de recursos naturais na confecção de produtos afim de serem consumidos. Em meio a isso a sociedade que se configura é a da produção, do consumo e do descarte, o que implica em agravamento da crise ambiental, portanto, novas funções sociais passam a surgir, como a reciclagem, e um novo grupo social é inserido no processo produtivo, os catadores de material reciclável. Mediante a isso, esta pesquisa teve por objetivo, analisar se o trabalho realizado por duas Associações de catadores de material reciclável do município de Xanxerê - SC promove a Dignidade da Pessoa Humana. A metodologia utilizada foi uma pesquisa de campo qualitativa orientada pela perspectiva teórica Dialética. O período da pesquisa foi entre os anos de 2015 a 2016. Os resultados foram que a condição humana destes trabalhadores está comprometida pelas condições objetivas do trabalho, pois a Dignidade da Pessoa Humana, não está sendo promovida levando ao comprometimento do direito à vida daqueles trabalhadores.
