Esse artigo tem por finalidade desenvolver uma interconexão teórica entre a geografia e a economia política, por meio da análise e contextualização das relações existentes entre o conceito de território usado e a categoria renda da terra. Por se tratar de uma construção teórica, esse ensaio não abordará nenhum estudo de caso em caráter particular, mas visa antes de tudo uma síntese, de modo a fortalecer as bases epistemológicas da geografia como ciência. O território usado enquanto sinônimo de espaço se coloca como o objeto central da ciência geográfica, corroborando para uma análise crítica-social da dinâmica em que se encontra inserida a sociedade; por isso nesse trabalho buscou-se uma relação prática desse conceito com uma das mais centrais categorias da economia política, a renda da terra. Em dois recortes temporais pôde-se verificar as relações inseparáveis desses objetos; tanto no Feudalismo quanto no Capitalismo a renda da terra alicerça-se sob a base da exploração humana, em virtude do uso do território.
O campesinato e as comunidades indígenas enquanto células sociais sempre se viram à mercê da estrutura dominante do modo de produção capitalista. Todavia, parte da Igreja Católica comprometida com as questões sociais conflitivas do campo, se engajou na luta de camponeses e indígenas pela posse de suas terras, seja por meio de atuações políticas ou através de atos práticos. Em virtude disto, o objetivo desse texto é mostrar o papel do Bispo Pedro Casaldáliga na luta pela terra na microrregião geográfica denominada Norte Araguaia, cuja delimitação e localização se dão no estado do Mato Grosso. Para tanto, foi realizada uma ampla investigação histórica/geográfica acerca da vida e atuação política e prática dessa figura memorável, o que também pressupôs uma revisão teórica da própria discussão do campesinato, bem como da Teologia da Libertação.
