Compared to two previous studies performed in 1990 and in 1995 in our hospital, the aluminum contamination of parenteral nutrition solutions and the daily aluminum intake of the children seemed to decrease. However, the plasma aluminum concentration and daily urinary aluminum excretion of the children still remain above normal standards. The children had no clinical symptoms of bone disease but aluminum accumulation in tissue can not be excluded. To prevent this iatrogenic toxicity, the aluminum contamination of parenteral nutrition should be assessed regularly.

Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is characterized by alveolar epithelial and vascular endothelial damage and inflammation, lung edema and hypoxemia. Up to one-third of recipients develop the most severe form of PGD (Grade 3; PGD3). Animal studies suggest that neutrophils contribute to the inflammatory process through neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release (NETosis). NETs are composed of DNA filaments decorated with granular proteins contributing to vascular occlusion associated with PGD. The main objective was to correlate NETosis in PGD3 (n = 9) versus non-PGD3 (n = 27) recipients in an exploratory study. Clinical data and blood samples were collected from donors and recipients pre-, intra- and postoperatively (up to 72 h). Inflammatory inducers of NETs’ release (IL-8, IL-6 and C-reactive protein [CRP]) and components (myeloperoxidase [MPO], MPO-DNA complexes and cell-free DNA [cfDNA]) were quantified by ELISA. When available, histology, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques were performed on lung biopsies from donor grafts collected during the surgery to evaluate the presence of activated neutrophils and NETs. Lung biopsies from donor grafts collected during transplantation presented various degrees of vascular occlusion including neutrophils undergoing NETosis. Additionally, in recipients intra- and postoperatively, circulating inflammatory (IL-6, IL-8) and NETosis biomarkers (MPO-DNA, MPO, cfDNA) were up to 4-fold higher in PGD3 recipients compared to non-PGD3 (p = 0.041 to 0.001). In summary, perioperative elevation of NETosis biomarkers is associated with PGD3 following human lung transplantation and these biomarkers might serve to identify recipients at risk of PGD3 and initiate preventive therapies.

Objectives. The COVID-19 pandemic has had many public health impacts, especially on vulnerable individuals including adults with neurocognitive disorders (NCD). With increasing literature, this systematic literature review aimed to address the mental health effects of COVID-19 on people with NCD in addition to examine the impact of the pandemic on treatments/resources for NCD. Methods. A literature search was conducted in the electronic databases of PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Studies were included so long as they assessed the mental health or therapeutic effects of COVID-19 on NCD. Results. Among the retrieved articles, 59 met eligibility criteria. First, the pandemic and resulting self-isolation led to many detrimental effects on psychological well-being. Exacerbation and relapses of neurocognitive and behavioral symptoms were observed, as well as emergences of new psychological symptoms (i.e., depression, anxiety). Second, therapeutic and community services for individuals suffering from NCD, such as social support services and outpatient clinics, were disrupted or reduced leading to postponed appointments and evaluations, as well as reduced access to medications. These issues were somewhat palliated with the growth of telemedicine. Conclusion. This systematic review highlights the extent of the effects of the pandemic, and the topics addressed should be taken into consideration by healthcare practitioners, institutions, and policymakers to ensure that proper measures are employed to protect this population from additional harm.
