PurposeThe study aims to explore and explain the affordances and constraints of two-mode virtual collaboration as experienced by a newly forming international research team.Design/methodology/approachThis is self-reflective and action-oriented research on the affordances and constraints of two-mode virtual collaboration. In the spirit of professional development, the authors (nine researchers at different career stages and from various counties) engaged in a joint endeavour to evaluate the affordances and constraints of virtual collaborations in light of the recent literature while also researching the authors' own virtual collaboration during this evaluative task (mid-January–April 2021). The authors used two modes: synchronous (Zoom) and asynchronous (emails) to communicate on the literature exploration and recorded reactions and emotional responses towards existing affordances and constraints through a collective journal.FindingsThe results suggest both affordances in terms of communication being negotiable and evolving and constraints, particularly in forming new relations given tools that may not be equally accessible to all. Journaling during collaborations could be a valuable tool, especially for virtual collective work, because it can be used to structure the team supported negotiation and discussion processes, especially often hidden processes. It is evident that the role of a leader can contribute to an alignment in the assumptions and experiences of trust and consequently foster greater mutual understanding of the circumstances for productive team collaborations.Originality/valueThe findings of this study can inform academics and practitioners on how to create and facilitate better opportunities for collaboration in virtual teams as a rapidly emerging form of technology-supported working.
Production management strategiesFTV Starvision related to Indonesian culture are the object of problems in research. The purpose of this study is to provide an understanding that the FTV Starvision shows are highly related to Indonesian culture. The results of the study concluded that Starvision in production FTV used several strategies at each stage of its production. Start from the stage preproduction, production, post production and evaluation. The strategy includes using newcomer performers whose salaries are still low, using locations that are often used so that in terms of licensing it is easier, to use vendors for equipment, and others. These strategies to save production costs. Another strategy is to use location, dialogue, accent, costume, property, which is very thick with Indonesian culture, it to introduce Indonesian culture through television media especially FTV.
The development of the mass media or broadcasting of terrestrial television in Indonesia is very rapid. Increasing number of terrestrial television stations in Indonesia makes the competition among television stations increasingly stringent. The terrestrial television requires a relatively high amount of revenue for operational costs. Advertising is one source of revenue. The advertisers will pair its ads in the program of interest by the public. Therefore, the television station competely to create programs that liked by the public. This is done so that the televison station can fight the competition. To determine whether the programs are interesting for public or not , the TV station uses the services of AGB Nielsen to measure whoever are viewing terrestrial television. The results of AGB Nielsen survey are rated and shared. The result of rating and share of the programs are liked by the public interest or not become a benchmark. The higher the rating and share program means the higher the interest of the public to watch the program. That became a problem and interesting to be discussed, in which in reality many programs are reprimanded by the KPI (Indonesian Broadcasting Commission) even in fact they have a high ratings. Whereas the program that gets a reprimand from the KPI is a program that can be said to be problematic and it cannot be imagined what happen if the problematic program maintained by the television station is on the pretext of a high rating. Facing this kind of television, viewers required to be more selective and critical of television, because media owner of television defends its economic interests. Therefore, the audience should have the skills of media literacy. Ability to digest what ispresented by the mass media, then the television is very important. Keywords:Media literacy, rating, share, AGB Nielsen
