When using superconducting (SC) magnets in a gantry for proton therapy, the gantry will benefit from some reduction in size and a large reduction in weight. In this contribution we show an important additional advantage of SC magnets in proton therapy treatments. We present the design of a gantry with a SC bending section and achromatic beam optics with a very large beam momentum acceptance of ±15%. Due to the related very large energy acceptance, approximately 70% of the treatments can be performed without changing the magnetic field for synchronization with energy modulation. In our design this is combined with a 2D lateral scanning system and a fast degrader mounted in the gantry, so that this gantry will be able to perform pencil beam scanning with very rapid energy variations at the patient, allowing a significant reduction of the irradiation time.We describe the iterative process we have applied to design the magnets and the beam transport, for which we have used different codes. COSY Infinity and OPAL have been used to design the beam transport optics and to track the particles in the magnetic fields, which are produced by the magnets designed in Opera. With beam optics calculations we have derived an optimal achromatic beam transport with the large momentum acceptance of the proton pencil beam and we show the agreement with particle tracking calculations in the 3D magnetic field map.A new cyclotron based facility with this gantry will have a significantly smaller footprint, since one can refrain from the degrader and energy selection system behind the cyclotron. In the treatments, this gantry will enable a very fast proton beam delivery sequence, which may be of advantage for treatments in moving tissue.

Nowadays there is a great deal of interest in the scientific community in developing nextgeneration accelerator magnets based on high-J c Nb 3 Sn Rutherford cables. Inside a cable the wires are subjected to the combined effect of axial and transverse load. Since Nb 3 Sn is a strain sensitive material, electromechanical characterization of cables is essential for magnet design. Testing a full-size Rutherford cable is an extremely complex and involved task. For this reason special Walters springs have been developed at the University of Geneva to test single wires under longitudinal and transverse load. In this work we analyze three PIT wires under transverse compressive load. To better understand the experimental results, a finite element model was developed. This model enabled better understanding of the mechanical behavior of the three samples and investigation of the mechanisms that determine wire performance degradation upon loading.

This paper provides an overview of the current developments in superconducting magnets for applications in proton and ion therapy. It summarizes the benefits and challenges regarding the utilization of these magnets in accelerating systems (e.g. superconducting cyclotrons) and gantries. The paper also provides examples of currently used superconducting particle therapy systems and proposed designs.

Understanding the critical current performance variation of Nb3Sn superconducting wires under mechanical loading is a crucial issue for the design of next generation accelerator and fusion magnets. In these applications, the mechanical properties of the conductors may become a limiting factor due to the strong electro-magnetic forces resulting from the combination of large magnets and intense magnetic fields. In particular, the presence of voids in the superconducting filament structure, which are formed during the fabrication and the reaction heat treatment, determines localized stress concentrations and possibly the formation of cracks. In this work, we demonstrate a quantitative correlation between the void morphology and the electro-mechanical limits measured on different Bronze route Nb3Sn wires. Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) prior to the reaction heat treatment is utilized to partially eliminate the voids. The wires’ void distributions - with and without HIP treatment - are detected and statistically analyzed using high energy X-ray micro tomography. The stress concentration due to the shape and distribution of the voids as well as their impact on the electro-mechanical properties are determined through finite element method modeling. Finally, the results are quantitatively correlated with the experimentally determined limits of the irreversible critical current degradation upon mechanical loading.
