Porém, outros efeitos transitórios também são observados, como o deslocamento anterior e inferior da maxila, extrusão dos dentes posteriores, giro no sentido horário da mandíbula e aumento da altura facial anterior inferior. Os efeitos sagitais podem influenciar a posição da mandíbula e estimular seu posicionamento a longo prazo. A correção da deficiência transversal maxilar, quando associada a discrepâncias sagitais, deve ser vista como condição prioritária dentro do planejamento ortodôntico, visando benefícios além da correção transversal, como aumento do perímetro do arco superior, deslocamento da maxila e mandíbula e aumento do assoalho nasal. A ERM traz benefícios que se sobrepõem aos efeitos colaterais da correção, permitindo então que seja usada nas más oclusões de Classe II e Classe III que necessitem corrigir a atresia encontrada, mesmo na ausência de mordida cruzada posterior.
