Soil temperature has a vital importance in biological, physical and chemical processes of terrestrial ecosystem and its modeling at different depths is very important for land-atmosphere interactions. The study compares four machine learning techniques, extreme learning machine (ELM), artificial neural networks (ANN), classification and regression trees (CART) and group method of data handling (GMDH) in estimating monthly soil temperatures at four different depths. Various combinations of climatic variables are utilized as input to the developed models. The models' outcomes are also compared with multi-linear regression based on Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, root mean square error, and coefficient of determination statistics. ELM is found to be generally performs better than the other four alternatives in estimating soil temperatures. A decrease in performance of the models is observed by an increase in soil depth. It is found that soil temperatures at three depths (5, 10 and 50 cm) could be mapped utilizing only air temperature data as input while solar radiation and wind speed information are also required for estimating soil temperature at the depth of 100 cm.
Accurately modeling pan evaporation is important in water resources planning and management and also in environmental engineering. This study compares the accuracy of two new data-driven methods, multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP) approach and dynamic evolving neural-fuzzy inference system (DENFIS), in modeling monthly pan evaporation. The climatic data, namely, minimum temperature, maximum temperature, solar radiation, relative humidity, wind speed, and pan evaporation, obtained from Antakya and Antalya stations, Mediterranean Region of Turkey were utilized in the study. The MGGP and DENFIS methods were also compared with genetic programming (GP) and calibrated version of Hargreaves Samani (CHS) empirical method. For Antakya station, GP had slightly better accuracy than the MGGP and DENFIS models and all the data-driven models performed were superior to the CHS while the DENFIS provided better performance than the other models in modeling pan evaporation at Antalya station. The effect of periodicity input to the models' accuracy was also investigated and it was found that adding periodicity significantly increased the accuracy of MGGP and DENFIS models.
Abstract-This study aims to publish a novel similarity metric to increase the speed of comparison operations. Also the new metric is suitable for distance-based operations among strings. Most of the simple calculation methods, such as string length are fast to calculate but doesn't represent the string correctly. On the other hand the methods like keeping the histogram over all characters in the string are slower but good to represent the string characteristics in some areas, like natural language. We propose a new metric, easy to calculate and satisfactory for string comparison.Method is built on a hash function, which gets a string at any size and outputs the most frequent K characters with their frequencies. The outputs are open for comparison and our studies showed that the success rate is quite satisfactory for the text mining operations.
