Resumo Introdução O homicídio, para além de um problema de saúde pública, é também revelador de um complexo contexto de desigualdade social, que impera nas capitais e grandes cidades do Brasil. Objetivo Analisar o contexto socioespacial de vítimas de homicídio doloso em uma capital do nordeste brasileiro. Método Estudo ecológico, de base documental, com abordagem quantitativa, realizado em João Pessoa, no estado da Paraíba, no Brasil, em 2015. Consideraram-se 369 vítimas de homicídio doloso. Os dados foram analisados à luz da estatística descritiva e da geografia espacial. Resultados As vítimas de homicídio doloso eram predominantemente homens, adultos jovens, não brancos, solteiros e com menos de sete anos de estudo. Ademais, verificou-se sobreposição, em grande medida, das áreas em que residiam aqueles indivíduos com as áreas de piores condições socioeconômicas. Conclusão O homicídio repercute substancialmente no quadro epidemiológico, porquanto, para além de sua característica letal, as questões que o circunscrevem, em que figura, de forma importante, são questões sociais complexas, amplas e de difícil modificação no curto prazo.
Pesquisa realizada no Seridó da Paraíba e do Rio Grande do Norte analisou o fenômeno da desertificação a partir do levantamento de indicadores socioeconômicos, ambientais e institucionais, organizados em força motriz, pressão, estado, impacto e resposta. O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi aprofundar a discussão sobre a relação entre os indicadores de força motriz e o meio ambiente. Os indicadores selecionados foram concentração de terras (área dos estabelecimentos rurais menores que o módulo fiscal e sob regime de não propriedade) e desigualdades no campo (população rural abaixo da linha de pobreza e analfabetismo), os quais representam causas estruturais ou indiretas da desertificação. A metodologia utilizada foi revisão bibliográfica e sistematização de dados referentes à estrutura fundiária, à escolaridade e à renda de 32 municípios do Núcleo Seridó do Rio Grande do Norte e da Paraíba. O Seridó do Rio Grande do Norte possui maior número de grandes propriedades e predomínio de imóveis com assentados sem titulação definitiva, arrendatários e produtores sem área. O analfabetismo no campo é maior nos municípios do Seridó Ocidental potiguar e Oriental paraibano. No Seridó paraibano predominam minifúndios e maior população rural abaixo da linha da pobreza. Em sua porção oriental predominam parceiros e ocupantes e na ocidental, arrendatários e ocupantes. A relação entre os indicadores estudados com o meio ambiente é variável e, portanto, dependente de dinâmicas locais.
A desordenada ocupação territorial do Semiárido brasileiro aliada a distribuição desigual das terras promoveu desigualdades no uso e no acesso aos recursos naturais. O processo de urbanização e industrialização e o consequente êxodo da população rural, geraram uma nova relação campo-cidade e significativas transformações ambientais. Aliado a isso, condições climáticas adversas e a forte pressão antrópica ao meio ambiente levaram a região a um quadro preocupante de degradação ambiental, com destaque para a região do Seridó do Rio Grande do Norte. Nessa pesquisa foi utilizado um índice de desenvolvimento sustentável para avaliar a relação entre a questão fundiária, uso do solo, extrativismo vegetal e pecuária com a degradação ambiental na microrregião do Seridó. Nessa região há um pequeno número de grandes propriedades que ocupam maiores extensões de terras, enquanto as pequenas propriedades possuem grande número de imóveis para pouca área disponível. No período estudado (1995-2017) houve aumento da atividade pecuária, notadamente a ovinocultura e caprinocultura. A extração de lenha reduziu na região, embora essa atividade ainda seja a principal causa da degradação no município de Parelhas. As terras na região são em geral utilizadas como lavoura temporárias e permanentes. Cruzeta, Equador, Santana do Seridó, São João do Sabugi e São José do Seridó foram os municípios com maiores níveis de degradação.
