SynopsisPolymerization of 1-aryl-2-trimethylsilylacetylene (aryl = thienyl, furyl, and pyridyl) was carried out by transition metal catalysts. The polymer yield was generally low due to the steric hindrance. R,Sn (R = Me, n-Bu, Ph) exhibits some cocatalytic activities with respect to polymer yield and molecular weight. On the other hand, the polymerization was decelerated when organoaluminum compounds were used as cocatalysts. The polymer yield increased in the following order: phenyl > thienyl > furyl > pyridyl, according to the aryl substituents. The NMR (*H-and 13C-), IR, and UV-visible spectra indicated that the resulting polymers have a linear conjugated polyene structure each containing the aromatic substituent and trimethylsilyl group. From 'H-NMR integration, it was found that the resulting polymers are partially desilylated depending on the substituents of monomer and the polymerization conditions. The solubility behavior, stability and fluoride-ion induced desilylation reaction of the polymers were also studied.
A new method is presented that uses guided wave techniques for sludge and blockages detection in long-range pipelines. Existing techniques have the limitations that the sludge position needs to be known a priori and the area to be inspected needs to be accessible. Two guided wave techniques have been developed which allow the sludge or blockages to be detected remotely without the need to access the specific location where the pipe is blocked, nor to open the pipe. The first technique measures the reflection of guided waves by sludge which can be used to accurately locate the blocked region; the second technique detects sludge by revealing the changes to the transmitted guid-
A technique is presented that uses a circular waveguide for the measurement of the bulk shear (S-wave) velocities of unconsolidated, saturated media, with particular application to near surface soils. The technique requires the measurement of the attenuation characteristics of the fundamental torsional mode that propagate along an embedded pipe, from which the acoustic properties of the surrounding medium are inferred. From the dispersion curve analysis, the feasibility of using fundamental torsional mode which is non-dispersive and have constant attenuation over all frequency range is discussed. The principles behind the technique are discussed and the results of an experimental laboratory validation are presented. The experimental data are best fitted for the different depths of wetted sand and the shear velocities are evaluated as a function of depths. Also the characteristics of the reflected signal from the defects are examined and the reflection coefficients are calculated for identifying the relation between defect sizes and the magnitude of the reflected signal.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
