Leaf essential oil of Magnolia coriacea (Hung T. Chang & B. L. Chen) Figlar growing wild in the Bat Dai Son Nature Reserve, Ha Giang Province, Viet Nam was obtained by hydrodistillation and its chemical composition was analyzed using GC/MS. In total, 45 compounds were detected in the essential oil, accounting for 87.1% of the oil, in which 37 compounds were identified accounting for 66.9%. Bicyclogermacrene (12.6%) and spathulenol (17.0%) were the main components of the leaf essential oil of M. coriacea. Antimicrobial activity of the essential oil sample was tested against three microorganism strains using an agar disk diffusion method. The results show that the inhibitory zone diameters ranged from 8.5 to 20.5 mm. Median inhibitory concentration (IC50) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the essential oil was determined using microdilution broth susceptibility assay against seven test microorganism strains. Bacillus subtilis had the highest sensitivity with IC50 and MIC values of 185.9 and 512 µg/mL, respectively.
This letter reports on long-band (L band) lasing whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in microspheres based on sol-gel silica-alumina glasses doped with high concentration of erbium ions (Er+3 from 1250 to 15 000 ppm). The sol-gel method for making these Er-doped silica-alumina glasses is described. The microspheres with diameters from 40 to 200μm were built by electrical arc. The experimental results show that laser oscillations with high gain at L band were obtained with different coupling schemes, especially with forward pumping and/or backward pumping coupling. The collected laser output power of one WGM could reach to −5dBm in the L band of 1570–1610 nm.
There are very few reports on the phytochemistry of Anoectochilus setaceus Blume, Codonopsis javanica (Blume) Hook. f. and Aristolochia kwangsiensis Chun & F.C.How ex S.Yun Liang species in the literature. Here we present essential oil compositions of the three endemic plants from Vietnam. The analysis of the chemical constituents of the hydrodistilled essential oils was achieved by using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The essential oils of A. setaceus, C. javanica and A. kwangsiensis afforded very low oil yields: 0.12%, 0.31% and 0.10% (v/w), respectively, calculated on a dry weight basis. The result indicated that the major components of the leaf oil of A. setaceus consist mainly of αcadinol (17.1%), (E,E)-farnesol (14.0%) and terpinen-4-ol (11.0%) while β-pinene (20.8%) and α-pinene (15.4%) were the main compounds identified in C. javanica. However, the significant compounds of A. kwangsiensis were sabinene (34.8%), β-caryophyllene (8.8%) and terpinen-4-ol (8.6%). To the best of our knowledge this is the first report on the essential oil compositions of these species.
From the leaves of Magnolia insignis, six compounds including (+)‐afzelechin (1), budlein B (2), pinoresinol monomethyl ether‐β‐D‐glucoside (3), nicotiflorin (4), kaempferol‐3‐O‐β‐D‐xylopyranose (5), astragalin (6) were isolated. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by MS and NMR spectra and comparison with the reported data. This is the first time that all of the above compounds have been isolated from Magnolia insignis.
The leaf and twig essential oils of Magnolia hypolampra, growing wild in Na Hang Nature Reserve, Tuyen Quang province of Vietnam, were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The oil yield calculated on a dry weight basis from leaves of M. hypolampra was very high (1.62%, v/w), while that from twigs was much lower (0.07%, v/w). The essential oils were dominated by monoterpenoids (74.3% and 84.8%) and sesquiterpenoids (24.4% and 13.3%) with β-pinene (36.5% and 41.3%), α-pinene (23.7% and 24.4%), and germacrene D (14.6% and 5.8%) as respective major components. Antibiotic activity of the essential oil samples was tested against Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, and yeast Candida albicans using an agar disk diffusion method. Both the leaf and twig oils showed strong inhibition against all 3 tested microorganism strains with inhibition zones from 18.5 to 30.5 mm and from 45.5 to 46 mm, respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentration of the essential oils was determined using microdilution broth susceptibility assay against 7 test microorganism strains including Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus fermentum, Salmonella enterica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and 3 abovementioned strains. Minimum inhibitory concentration values of the essential oil from the twigs were from 2.0 to 8.2 mg/mL, while those from the leaves were from 4.1 to 16.4 mg/mL.

One new flavonol diglycoside, 4',5-dihydroxy-3,3',7-trimethoxyflavone 4'-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), and two known compounds (2-3) were isolated from the methanolic extract of Anoectochilus annamensis Aver. aerial parts. This is the first report on the chemical composition and biological activity of A. annamensis.
This study was conducted to determine the soil contamination and the accumulation of arsenic (As) and heavy metals including chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in 15 native and cultivated plant species in a Pb recycling area of Dong Mai village, Hung Yen Province, Vietnam. The analysis of 32 soil samples collected from seven different sites in the study area revealed that the contents of Al, Fe, As, Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the soils ranged from 6200–32,600, 11,300–55,500, 5.4–26.8, 24.9–290, 66.0–252, 143–455, 0.71–1.67, and 370–47,400 mg/kg, respectively. The contents of As, Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in rice grains and the shoots of 15 plant species ranged from 0.14–10.2, 1.00–10.2, 5.19–23.8, 34.7–165, 0.06–0.99, and 2.83–1160 mg/kg-dry weight (DW), respectively. Hymenachne acutigluma (Steud.) Gilliland, a potential hyperaccumulator of Pb (1160 mg/kg–DW), is considered the best candidate for phytoremediation of Pb-contaminated soil. The cultivation of rice and vegetables, and the use of some native plants for food for humans, pigs, and cattle should be managed with consideration of the accumulation of Pb in their aboveground biomass.
