Rev baiana enferm.
Objective: To analyze the prevalence of pressure injuries, diabetic and vasculogenic ulcers and associated factors in older adults attended in primary care. Method: A cross-sectional, analytical study with older adults attended in the Family Health Strategy in a Brazilian municipality. Data collection was performed from January to March 2016 using interviews and evaluations of injuries. The variables were submitted to the multivariate logistic regression model using the odds ratio, with their respective 95% confidence intervals and significance set at <0.05. Results: 339 older adults participated in the study. The mean age was 71.1 years, 67.3% were female, 44% were illiterate, 85% had low family income, 91.7% had underlying diseases, 37.2% had dietary restrictions, and 76.1% did not practice physical activity. The prevalence of pressure injury was 5.0%, diabetic ulcer 3.2%, and vasculogenic ulcer 2.9%. Not working and not regularly practicing physical activity increased the chances of presenting these injuries by 1.5 and 2.3 times, respectively. Being actively mobility and not having dietary restrictions were protective factors for not developing chronic wounds. Conclusion: The prevalence of injuries among older adults was high, and its occurrence is associated with socioeconomic and clinical characteristics.
It aimed to analyze the scientific production of Brazilian nursing, from 1979 to 2007, about the practices of the elderly's informal caregiver at home. This is a bibliographic review, with qualitative approach, developed in the period of June and July 2009, that studied thesis and dissertations published in the Center of Studies and Researches in Nursing' catalogs. To analyze the data collected, it was used the thematic categorization system. From eleven works identified, four categories brought out: activities done by the caregiver, difficulties in the quotidian of care, feelings lived by the caregiver and knowledge and experiences of the caregiver. Knowledge of the work of these caregivers is critical for the actions of nurses and health team, addressing not only care for the elderly, but also of their caregivers. Key words: Nursing; Elder; Home care; Caregiver. Background:: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is becoming the major health issue in recent human history with thousands of deaths and millions of cases worldwide. Newer research and old experience with other corona-viruses highlighted a probable underlying mechanism of disturbance of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) that is associ-ated with intrinsic effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection Objective:: In this review, we aimed to describe the intimate connections between the RAS components, the immune system and COVID-19 pathophysiology. Methods:: This non-systematic review article summarizes recent evidence on the relationship between COVID-19 and the RAS. Results:: Several studies have indicated that the downregulation of membrane-bound ACE2 may exert a key role for the impairment of immune functions and for COVID-19 patients’ outcome. The downregulation may occur by distinct mecha-nisms, particularly: (1) the shedding process induced by SARS-CoV-2 fusion pathway, which reduces the amount of mem-brane-bound ACE2, stimulating more shedding by the high levels of Angiotensin II; (2) the endocytosis of ACE2 receptor with the virus itself and (3) by the interferon inhibition caused by SARS-CoV-2 effects on immune system, which leads to reduction of ACE2 receptor expression. Conclusion:: Recent research provides evidence of a reduction of the components of the alternative RAS axis, including ACE2 and Angiotensin-(1-7). In contrast, increased levels of Angiotensin II can activate the AT1 receptor in several organs. Consequently, increased inflammation, thrombosis and angiogenesis occur in patients infected with SARS-COV-2. Atten-tion should be paid to the interactions of the RAS and COVID-19, mainly in the context of novel vaccines and proposed medications.
Introduction: Estimates of the number of individuals infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 are important for health planning and establishment of expectations regarding herd immunity. Methods: Seven testing rounds of a serological survey were conducted at 1-week intervals between April 19 and May 31, 2020 in Teresina municipality. Results: Over the 7 weeks, serological positivity increased from 0.56% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.18%-1.30%) to 8.33% (95% CI: 6.61%-10.33%), representing 33-53 persons infected for each reported case. Conclusions: Serological screening may be an important tool for understanding the immunity of a population and planning community interventions.
