Les auteurs explorent les expressions ayant cours dans des dispositifs d’accompagnement socio-éducatif. Ils mettent en évidence que le mot « jeune » peut être une catégorie « fourre-tout » ou être associée à d’autres éléments qui conduisent au stigmate. Ces processus amènent à simplifier la situation des individus aux vulnérabilités multiples et à réduire l’accompagnement social au stigmate identifié. La réaction sociale découle alors des catégories employées et n’est pas sans conséquence sur les représentations sociales véhiculées à l’égard de ces jeunes. En conclusion, les auteurs proposent d’interroger l’éthique du langage employé pour penser l’action différemment.
Pour une société, la prise en charge d’individus qui ne rentrent pas dans le cadre de ses schèmes normatifs est d’une intense et perpétuelle complexité : nombre de personnes sont ainsi orientées dans des espaces clos n’ayant qu’une porosité réduite avec le monde extérieur. Le placement en institution médico-sociale (qui représente un de ces espaces clos) est une profonde source de stigmatisation qui implique des logiques de production pour ceux qui en sont les acteurs volontaires ou pas, et des logiques de gestion pour ceux qui la subissent. À partir d’une observation incognito dans un IMPro (Institut Médico-Professionnel), cet article tente de montrer comment la stigmatisation prend forme dans la vie sociale d’adolescents placés. Il mettra également l’accent sur les ressources dont ils disposent pour contrecarrer les effets du stigmate et protéger leur identité sociale.
Deux populations différentes sont comparées à l’aune des souffrances qui ont pu être observées et parfois exprimées auprès des enquêteurs : des jeunes personnes scolarisées dans un Institut Médico-Professionnel et des adultes qui exercent leurs habiletés physiques comme professionnels (du spectacle, de la parfumerie, de la dégustation, etc.). Deux populations opposées à bien des égards et qui pourtant sont analysées pour mesurer précisément les situations de souffrance vécues par les uns et les autres. La construction identitaire mâtinée de souffrance apparaît comme un commun dénominateur, avec des actions et des profits variés, parfois des résistances qui prennent les contours d’une réussite sociale ou professionnelle.
