Observed differences in pharmacokinetics were attributed to body weight, with no additional independent effect of age. Thus, no dose adjustment from the standard dose of gadobutrol in adults based on body weight (0.1 mmol/kg) is necessary in pediatric patients aged 2 to 17 years. Gadobutrol was safe and well tolerated in the pediatric population in this study.
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of intravitreal bevacizumab (Avastin) injections on visual acuity (VA) and foveal retinal thickness in patients with macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion. Associated risk factors include advanced age (usually 60-70 years), arterial hypertension, arteriolosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia and smoking.
A novel technique, Multiply Scattered Light Tomography (MSLT), and confocal Infrared Imaging are used to provide diagnostic information using a comfortable, rapid, and noninvasive method. We investigated these techniques in detecting neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration. The MSLT used a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) at 850 nm, while the confocal imaging technique used either the VCSEL or a 790 nm laser diode. Both were implemented into the topographical scanning system (TopSS, Laser Diagnostic Technologies, Inc.) Confocal imaging with both lasers provided different information about neovascularization as a function of focal plane, and different also from MSLT.
Featured Application: In this review we present and discuss the published literature on the use of ultrasound-based liver elastography in children. The published data show that all the available shear wave elastography techniques are feasible and accurate for the assessment of liver fibrosis in children with diffuse liver disease due to several etiologies. For the assessment of focal liver lesions evidences are limited and no conclusion can be drawn so far.Abstract: Studies performed using transient elastography (TE), point shear wave elastography (pSWE) and two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) have shown that these techniques are all feasible and accurate in children for the evaluation of liver fibrosis due to several etiologies. However, for some specific pediatric pathologies, such as biliary atresia, the evidence is still limited. As shown in adults, inflammation is a confounding factor when assessing fibrosis severity and care should be taken when interpreting the results. Due to the scarce comparative data between serological tests and elastography techniques in children, a definite conclusion regarding which is the best cannot be drawn. Neither non-invasive elastographic techniques nor laboratory scores allow determination of the presence and the degree of inflammation, necrosis, iron or copper deposits.
The PK profile of gadobutrol in children aged younger than 2 years including newborns is similar to that in older children and adults. At the dose of 0.1 mmol/kg BW, gadobutrol had a favorable safety profile and was well tolerated with similar profile across the age range 0 to younger than 2 years and compared with older children and adults. Extrapolation of efficacy data from adults to the younger pediatric population, including term newborns, is justified. The recommended standard dose of gadobutrol (0.1 mmol/kg BW), as used in the population aged 2 years and older, is also appropriate in children aged younger than 2 years.
Ultrasound elastography including transient elastography (TE), point shear wave elastography, (pSWE) and two (three)- dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) have been introduced mainly for the evaluation of the liver. All the techniques are also feasible for the examination of spleen, whereas pSWE and 2D-SWE can be used for the assessment of the pancreas, kidney, gastrointestinal tract and other organs. Strain elastography also plays a role for non-liver applications. The aim of the current report is to highlight unique features and techniques for the elastographic examinations in children and to report initial results in non-liver applications
The liver and biliary tract were the most commonly affected of all body regions, at 32%. This was followed by the lung, including the respiratory tract, at 27%, and by the gastrointestinal tract, at 10%. Lesions of the large bowel, as in the present case of a 9-year-old boy, are very rare. There were organ-related as well as nonspecific clinical symptoms, such as fever, weight loss, and fatigue. Laboratory test results revealed anemia and elevated inflammation-dependent parameters. The patterns in medical imaging are variable and nonspecific. Morphology often suggests a malignant process. For this reason, therapy in most cases is surgical, but this is required more often in IMTs. Many IPTs could be treated conservatively.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
