There are significant differences between patients with AMD and DME regarding compliance and adherence, which also affects outcome. Strategies to tie patients with DME to costly intravitreal therapy need to be developed to improve outcomes and efficacy.
Even in cases with chronic diffuse ischemic diabetic macular edema, a long-term decrease of central retinal thickness can be observed following repeated intravitreal injections of bevacizumab. In these patients, mean decrease in retinal thickness is aligned with a gain in mean VA. Treatment with bevacizumab at an earlier stage of diabetic macular edema without ischemia may be associated with an even better functional outcome.
ABSTR AC TPurpose To perform a systematic analysis of articles on the ophthalmological implications of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Methods PubMed.gov was searched for relevant articles using the keywords "COVID-19", "coronavirus", and "SARS-CoV-2" in conjunction with "ophthalmology" and "eye". Moreover, official recommendations of ophthalmological societies were systematically reviewed, with a focus on the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth).
MMP-1 and MMP-3 in the retinal pigment epithelium are inducible by oxidative stress. The directional shift in the MMP-1,-3/TIMP-1 ratio is associated with increased type I collagen degradation. This may be an important mechanism contributing to the pathogenesis of early exudative AMD.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
