were among those who contributed to the institute's research. They were convinced that the solution to the German question was the key to a lasting European settlement. 2 While a number of studies can be found on the Council on Foreign Relations, 3 the IAP, 4 the Institute of Pacific Affairs, 5 and other institutes, 6 historians have refrained to date from writing a more detailed study about the history of Chatham House and its role in British-German relations. This paper builds on the results of two funded research projects on West German press history that were led by Haase as principal investigator. Financial contributions were made by the British Academy, the ZEIT-Foundation and the Marion Dönhoff Foundation. The article includes results of a PhD thesis by Kraiker on West German press history in the 1970s that was supervised by Haase (first) and John Young (second) and funded by the University of Nottingham. For publications, see footnotes 22,26 and 28. We are thankful for the comments by the referees and various colleagues at the University of Nottingham on this paper.
