Partant de l'analyse de deux opérations agri-environnementales, qui associent l'élevage à la protection de la nature dans le sud de la France, l'auteur étudie la construction sociale des liens entre les fonctionnements naturels, tels qu'ils sont formalisés par les écologistes ou les experts des incendies, et les pratiques agricoles. Loin d'être une ligne droite allant du diagnostic environnemental à la mise en œuvre de solutions appropriées, ce processus réunit des faits, des modèles et des agents très hétérogènes au sein de réseaux sociotechniques constamment en expansion. La prise en compte de la nature donne lieu à des configurations sociales très différentes : elle réhabilite dans la Crau des techniques (et les éleveurs correspondants), naguère jugées « archaïques », tandis que, dans le Var, elle promeut de nouveaux agents sociaux se réclamant d'une ingénierie environnementale innovatrice.
