Literature on the conversion from intensive to organic farming is scarce. However, both the conversion of farmers to organic farming and of consumers to organic food are the driving forces for the development of the organic sector. In this review, we combine agricultural and social scientists' viewpoints for a critical appraisal of literature on conversion to organic food and farming. First, a brief historical retrospective enables us to refer the scientific production to the institutional and economic context over the past decades. Secondly, we review the methods used to analyse conversion in agricultural and social sciences, and show that emphasis is most often laid upon the effects of conversion and the motivations to convert, on the basis of comparative approaches with so-called conventional agriculture. Therefore, the literature minimises the importance of transitional aspects and trajectories, and rarely approaches conversion as a longer process than its legal duration and from a wider point of view. Thirdly, we examine the paradigms of input efficiency and system redesign, which frame discussions about transitions in agriculture, beyond organics, and therefore helps shed light on sustainability issues. We suggest that analysing conversion and more generally transitions in agriculture as multidimensional issues, involving both production and social practices, entails interdisciplinary approaches and the redefinition of some central research topics. organic food and farming / conversion / transition / conventionalisation thesis / interdisciplinarity / redesign

¿Cómo lograr que la biodiversidad un bien común de la humanidad se mantenga como un recurso colectivo propio de las comunidades humanas que dependen directamente de ella para su subsistencia? Este es el tema que aquí se analiza, el cual ha sido institucionalizado por la creación de reservas de biosfera en México y otras partes del mundo. Si bien, la preservación de la biodiversidad es de interés común, la creación de reservas implica para las poblaciones residentes una alteración de las modalidades de apropiación y acceso a recursos vitales para ellas. Este artículo aborda el caso de la Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules (REBIMA) y la Reserva de la Biosfera Lacantún (REBILA) en Chiapas. Es un aporte a la discusión por su importancia y un reto a la democracia ambiental, al exponer diversas racionalidades que interactúan en la REBIMA. Asimismo, discute la necesidad de crear consensos entre los actores involucrados que propicien procesos de co-construcción de recursos cognitivos locales para el uso y manejo de la biodiversidad a fin de resolver la pregunta arriba formulada.

Abstract. The multifunctional farm sector in Cyprus poses threats on the island's water resources, but also highly contributes to preserving the cultural identity, incomes and employment in rural areas. This paper presents an application of the Choice Experiment method, in order to evaluate these features of Cypriot agriculture, which are externalities, as farmers are not remunerated in markets for such services. The results of the empirical analysis demonstrate that the Cypriot public is in favor of a less intensive pattern of agriculture. Furthermore, Cypriots are willing to pay in order to mitigate adverse environmental effects of agriculture, to improve cultural heritage and to safeguard the continuation of farming trade on the island. The estimated benefits often exceed income losses from changes in the cropping pattern, which verifies that EU rural development policies are regarded as beneficial by the public.
