Christian Albertan: The Trévoux Journalists as Readers of the Encyclopédie.
The Jesuit journalists of the Mémoires de Trévoux were among the first to analyse the beginnings of the enterprise of the Encyclopédie, in articles extending over three years (1751-53). While their journal shows they sincerely admired some articles, mainly those of scientific or technical subjects, they showed great severity towards the rest of the work; they emphasized numerous blemishes, plagiarism and above all passages which endangered religion and political authority. They are therefore frequently seen simply as biased persecutors of the Encyclopédie. But a detailed analysis of their articles shows that this judgement must be toned down; the Jesuits did not necessarily encourage this dispute, which harmed them and during which they were probably silenced.
