The University of Arizona UAN Chapter engages middle school, high school, and undergraduate students through research‐oriented outreach. Our fifth annual BECUR Conference held in February 2014 featured posters and talks by undergraduate and high school students with Professor Roy Parker as the keynote speaker. Building upon the success of BECUR, our chapter is organizing two more outreach activities: the Visiting Scholars program and BlastOff! summer camp. Visiting Scholars sends undergraduates into high school classrooms to present research, provide information on opportunities in science, and share their college experiences. The program is now a formal department course. BlastOff! is a five‐day biology‐oriented summer camp that recruits middle school students from underrepresented populations in the sciences. Campers are exposed to “wet lab” techniques, scientific theories, and hands‐on projects, while field trips and presentations by guest speakers complement lab activities.
