The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a very recent development in higher education institutions in Malaysia. As in September 2015, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has introduced Mandarin course under Malaysia MOOCs. The study has focused on undergraduate's perception of MOOC in Mandarin subject in fostering their employability skills as a research variable. The researcher used qualitative and quantitative method as a research design. An interview was used to investigate their perception of MOOC in Mandarin subject to foster their employability skills. An online survey was also conducted to investigate the effectiveness of MOOC learning. Undergraduates in UTeM were selected as the respondents of this study. The findings show that among all the employability skill, students believe Mandarin Massive online learning course fosters two employability skills which are 'information gaining skill' and 'system and technology skill'.This study on MOOCs is important for the decision-making of the government and relevant institution to make sound decisions. This research is also significant for its contribution towards teaching practices in higher education institution.
The extent to which web sites in Malaysian and Australian universities project their interactivity level was analysed. Content analysis was employed to measure the interactivity level. Twenty-six guidelines were selected and twenty university web sites from each country were randomly selected. The findings showed that human to marketer and human to human showed significant difference while human to content did not show any difference. This study will be an addition to web design literature and facilitate universities and individuals to develop effective strategies to elevate the image of universities in the global context. Future study should examine other interactivity dimensions which are not covered in this study and insights from web designer are also deemed important to ascertain the scenario behind the screen.
Mastering Mandarin is an asset for international business. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the relationships between motivational factors and academic achievement. It provides a numerical estimate of how closely or distantly these two variables are related. A quantitative analysis was used through a survey questionnaire among selected undergraduates learning Mandarin at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. Besides, classroom assessments were also conducted to enrich the data. The findings showed that there was a significant relationship between Mandarin scores and all the six motivational factors which were future occupation, intrinsic value and self-development, friendship, entertainment, Chinese influence and travel, requirement motivation, and Chinese culture and community. The strength of the relationship is moderate and positive. The results are important in determining the content of Mandarin learning material which may lead to effective and efficient learning process. Future studies should focus on more variables to enhance performance in learning Mandarin.
This article reviewed reflection of knowledge dissemination on Islamic historiography and how it influenced Islamic thought among the local Malay community. The analysis yielded four themes namely reflection on the means of dissemination of knowledge, Reflection on dissemination of knowledge in Science, Mathematics and Chemistry in the Malay World. This study provides a guide for historians and practitioners in the Malay-Islamic realms. Future research should focus on the development of reflection on knowledge dissemination by other ethnic groups to provide a rich insight into various discourses on reflection.
