Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (known as chuanbeimu in Chinese, FCB) is a famous folk medicine which has been widely used to relieve cough and eliminate phlegm for thousands of years in China. The medicine originates from dried bulbs of six species of Fritillaria which are distributed in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. Increasing attention has been paid to FCB because of its excellent medicinal value such as being antitussive, expectorant, analgesic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative. During the past years, a large number of research studies have been conducted to investigate the phytochemistry, pharmacology, and pharmacokinetics of FCB. A range of compounds have been isolated and identified from FCB, including alkaloids, saponins, nucleosides, organic acids, terpenoids, and sterols. Among them, alkaloids as the main active ingredient have been illustrated to exert significant therapeutic effects on many diseases such as cancer, acute lung injury, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetes. Due to the excellent medical value and low toxicity, FCB has a huge market all over the world and triggers a growing enthusiasm among researchers. However, there is still a lack of systematic review. Hence, in this work, we reviewed the FCB-based articles published in Sci Finder, Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, CNKI, and other databases in the recent years. The traditional uses, sources, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity of FCB were discussed in the review, which aims to provide a reference for further development and utilization of FCB.

The middle layer is an essential cell layer of the anther wall located between the endothecium and tapetum in Arabidopsis. Based on sectioning, the middle layer was found to be degraded at stage 7, which led to the separation of the tapetum from the anther wall. Here, we established techniques for live imaging of the anther. We created a marker line with fluorescent proteins expressed in all anther layers to study anther development. Several staining methods were used in the intact anthers to study anther cell morphology. We clarified the initiation, development, and degradation of the middle layer in Arabidopsis. This layer is initiated from both the inner and outer secondary parietal cells at stage 4, stopped cell division at stage 6, and finally degraded at stage 11. The neighboring cell layers, the epidermis, and endothecium continued cell division until stage 10, which led to a thin middle layer. The degradation of the tapetum cell wall at stage 7 lead to its isolation from the anther wall. This work presents fundamental information on the development of the middle layer, which facilitates the further investigation of anther development and plant fertility. These live imaging methods could be useful in future studies.

Halogenated aromatic industrial compounds, typified by the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and biphenyls (PCBs) have been identified as residues in almost every component of the global ecosystem. Risk assessment of the complex mixtures of halogenated aromatics found in envi ronmental samples is complicated by analytical problems and the lack of toxicological information on individual compounds and mixtures. Research in our laboratory has focused on the develop ment and vadidation of the in vitro aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) induction assay in rat hepatoma H-4-II E cells in culture for quantitating individual toxic halogenated aryl hydrocarbons and their mixtures. For several PCB, PCDD, PCDF congeners, their mixed bromo/chloro analogs and reconstituted mixtures there was an excellent linear correlation between their -log ED50 values for AHH induction in rat hepatoma cells and their -log ED50 values for in vivo hepatic microsomal AHH induction, inhibi tion of body weight gain and thymic atrophy in the rat. It has also been shown for selected compounds that there was a good correla tion between their in vitro AHH induction potencies and their effects in guinea pigs (AHH induction, inhibition of body weight gain) and mice (immunotoxicity). This assay system has been uti lized to quantitate the "2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) equivalents "present in extracts from diverse sources including fly ash from a municipal incinerator and pyrolyzed brom inated flame retardants which contain a complex mixture of halo genated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans.
