Urbanization, and the resulting land use/cover change, is a primary cause of the degradation of coastal wetland ecosystems. Reclamation projects are seen as a way to strike a balance between socioeconomic development and maintenance of coastal ecosystems. Our aim was to understand the ecological changes to Jiangsu's coastal wetland resulting from land use change since 1977 by using remote sensing and spatial analyses. The results indicate that: (1) The area of artificial land use expanded while natural land use was reduced, which emphasized an increase in production-orientated land uses at the expense of ecologically important wetlands; (2) It took 34 years for landscape ecological security and 39 years for ecosystem services to regain equilibrium. The coastal reclamation area would recover ecological equilibrium only after a minimum of 30 years; (3) The total ecosystem service value decreased significantly from $2.98 billion per year to $2.31 billion per year from 1977 to 2014. Food production was the only one ecosystem service function that consistently increased, mainly because of government policy; (4) The relationship between landscape ecological security and ecosystem services is complicated, mainly because of the scale effect of landscape ecology. Spatial analysis of changing gravity centers showed that landscape ecological security and ecosystem service quality became better in the north than the south over the study period.
Overuse of chemical fertilizer has led to severe land degradation and environmental pollution in China. Switching to organic fertilizer may improve soil quality and reduce pollution, which is meaningful to the sustainable development of Chinese agriculture. This study examines how farmers’ perceptions and risk preference affect their organic fertilizer investment using a representative rural household survey from Guangxi, a major agricultural region in China. Tobit and double-hurdle models are used to empirically test their impacts on organic fertilizer adoption and investment. An ordinary least squares model is used to regress chemical fertilizer use on the same set of explanatory variables to compare and contrast farmers’ different fertilizer investment behaviors. It is found that both organic fertilizer perceptions and risk attitude significantly affect organic fertilizer investment. Perceived yield-increasing and quality-improving effects encourage organic fertilizer investment, while perceived cost increases discourage it. Moreover, risk-averse farmers are more likely to invest in organic fertilizers. Most of the perceptions affecting organic fertilizer investment have an opposite impact on chemical fertilizer investment, which suggests substitutability between organic and chemical fertilizer. Interventions that aim to improve farmers’ perceptions of organic fertilizer and illustrate its risk-reduction effect could be effective in promoting organic fertilizer use, which can help achieve China’s sustainable development of agriculture.
This paper presents the application a 3D hydrodynamic model (EFDC) to Little Manatee River (LMR) estuary located in the southwestern of Tampa Bay. Model boundaries were specified by field observations of hourly observations for model simulations, including freshwater inputs, tides, winds, salinity and temperatures at bay boundary, and air temperatures. By comparison with observations of water levels, salinity, and temperature at several river stations, the hydrodynamic model for LMR river system has been satisfactorily calibrated and verified to support water resources and estuary ecological studies. Salinity intrusions in the river system were investigated under typical low, average, and high flow conditions.
Hyperspectral data are an important source for monitoring soil salt content on a large scale. However, in previous studies, barriers such as interference due to the presence of vegetation restricted the precision of mapping soil salt content. This study tested a new method for predicting soil salt content with improved precision by using Chinese hyperspectral data, HuanJing-Hyper Spectral Imager (HJ-HSI), in the coastal area of Rudong County, Eastern China. The vegetation-covered area and coastal bare flat area were distinguished by using the normalized differential vegetation index at the band length of 705 nm (NDVI 705). The soil salt content of each area was predicted by various algorithms. A Normal Soil Salt Content Response Index (NSSRI) was constructed from continuum-removed reflectance (CR-reflectance) at wavelengths of 908.95 nm and 687.41 nm to predict the soil salt content in the coastal bare flat area (NDVI 705 < 0.2). The soil adjusted salinity index (SAVI) was applied to predict the soil salt content in the vegetation-covered area (NDVI 705 ≥ 0.2). The results demonstrate that 1) the new method significantly improves the accuracy of soil salt content mapping (R 2 = 0.6396, RMSE = 0.3591), and 2) HJ-HSI data can be used to map soil salt content precisely and are suitable for monitoring soil salt content on a large scale.
Modern agriculture contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. How to reduce such emissions without sacrificing agricultural development is a common issue concerning most developing countries. In China, a rural revitalization strategy proposed in 2018 aims to achieve agricultural modernization by 2050, while reaching a carbon emission peak by 2030 and neutrality by 2060. However, China’s progress towards these goals is largely unknown. This study evaluates the coupling coordination and spatiotemporal dynamic evolution between agricultural carbon emissions and agricultural modernization in China from 2010 to 2020 through a joint employment of spatial autocorrelation and coupling coordination degree modeling. The results show that from 2010 to 2020, the agricultural modernization level increased from 0.155 to 0.272, and the agricultural carbon emission intensity decreased from 4.9 tons per CYN million to 2.43 tons. Agricultural carbon emissions and the agricultural modernization level manifest significant spatially agglomerative patterns with noticeable discrepancies across different regions. Moreover, the coupling coordination degree between agricultural carbon emissions and agricultural modernization has increased every year, but disparities among provinces continued to widen. Specifically, coupling coordination in northern China is significantly higher than that in the south, and its spatial distribution exhibits a positive correlation and increasing levels of clustering. These results point to the continued need for sustainable agricultural development efforts, such as strengthening rural infrastructure and diffusing green technologies in achieving China’s dual carbon emission and agricultural modernization goals. This study also examines the sustainable agricultural development issue from a new perspective, and the findings can provide policy references for sustainable agricultural development policies in China.
